Never thought about it before, and I know I only spent two or three hundred dollars on it when I graduated, but I just calculated its gold melt value (in light of the recent boom in gold price) at just a few dollars shy of $1,000.00. Add the approximately 20% of its composition being silver (14K gold being 58.65 weight percent gold, and about about 20 weight percent silver), and it's easily $1,000.00 melt.
It's sobering to think, however, that it's not really the metals that have become more valuable since I graduated college so much as the US Dollar having lost that much value since I graduated college.

1K? There's another pistol, what are you waiting for?? I took a magnifying glass to the inside and found the maker. I looked up what they were currently selling the exact same ring for, i.e., $1,500.00. Damn! Link to ad

Oh ?, well I rarely wear either my wedding or college ring, because I'd destroy them working. And 1 job wasn't allowed any rings, due to liability insurance.... arcing from super high voltage devices.

Jewelry is jewelry. Like it or not. I don’t like it personally. Some do along with a quart of cologne. More power to them.

Still have all three HS, BS, and MA, Wife bought the MA and yes I was in a Fraternity, even after 57 years still have many great friends from those days. Met my wife of 54 years at a Frat party, With a College Degree learned I could make more money working with a brain instead of getting my hands dirty, which I did to pay for College.

I don't wear jewelry anymore. My high school girlfriend lost my HS class ring in the river ….it's a long story but it was an accident. It was never replaced. After that I knew I would never have a college class ring. In college I wore gold jewelry like rings and chains because it was "In style". During my business career, I was given a couple of gold rings for my accomplishments with a company I worked for. Today I only wear my gold wedding ring. All of my old jewelry is kept in a bag to be melted down some day. Probably need to weigh all of it and who knows that day may come soon.

Ha!
That is going to be a conflict.
On the one hand the Jews invented jewelry to get money from you for worthless shiny things.....and then the Germans were forced to take rings from the Jews at their Happy Camps.
They obviously needed the jewelry to pay for their gardeners once the mean allies cut off their supply of gypsies.
