I'm in the middle of redoing a sporterized Remington 1903a3 stock and it needs a new recoil pad. A new pad needs measure 1-1/2" wide 4-3/4" or slightly more tall and 1" thickness. Hole spacing is 2-7/8". It amazes me that most recoil pad descriptions for sale lack this basic dimensional information. I prefer black rubber, but may settle for brown. I'm not not overly picky. Any make and model information is helpful. I order stuff from all the usual sources.

A "small" Pachmayer should work. Might need a little grinding though.

I'm sure you already know this but make sure the pad is long enough for you to continue the line of the stock at the toe. I would rather do some extra grinding rather than risking not enough material at that point.

I like the new Hogue recoil pads as they have NO metal backing plate. They are very similar to Pachmayr Decelerator pads except they are a little tougher towards the outside edges. They grind well and the base is true and flat. So far customers/clients have been complementary with zero complaints. I gave them a try when I had three of the "brand name" pads with off-center metal backing plates - what's worse, the manufacturer failed to replace as they considered them "used". I just bought some pads from a new company "Grind Recoil" but have not had the oportunity to try any yet. After I use up my Pachmayrs and others having metal backing plates, I will not reorder any more. As to other brands, I've also used Uncle Mike's pads with no issues but not sure if they are still being produced.

I can sympathize with troubles using pads with steel inserts. The "small" pachmayr pad I ordered on the first attempt must have been out of tolerance with a shifted insert. The butt on this stock measures 1-11/16" wide and I did a fairly decent job on getting it centered, within a 32nd side to side. I still hit the steel insert while grinding it down. According to the template above this should not have happened.

Second attempt used a Limb Saver recoil pad that worked much better. It is softer and slightly more difficult to grind down, but a rough circle sander wheel on a dremel tool did most of the rough work. I then finished using a pad sander. It came out nice, but exactly twice as expensive as anticipated. Happens in the wood shop I suppose.

Pachmayer makes an ultralight pad sans insert. Sadly, it is only 1/2" thick.

If the Hastings pads are still the Cervallati ones from italy, you definitely want to put them in the freezer overnight and use a really fine grinding disk like a 320 or 400. Really soft on the shoulder and IIRC not steel insert but you need to be extra careful with the rubber.
