I’ve seen a lot of posts on here about the prowess of the 155 Scenar, but have not been able to get my hands on any. I have a box of 155 grain VLD’s I’d like to use up in the meantime. I have Varget, RL 15, AR Comp, IMR 4064, TAC, and H4895. Any good loads for these?

45-47 of Varget should do it for you. My Scenar load is 46.5 grs, F210M, ADG brass.

When all you have for breakfast is 4 or 5 Mimosas, you really should put at least a little orange juice in them. Hint........

any one of those powder would work great in a 308 case, or ANY 308 based case. I don't think you have a wrong answer hiding within your question...which is a good thing...

What make brass and primer are you planning to use?

308 Winchester, 155 Scenar, Lapua case, 48.5 gr Varget = one ragged hole at 2885 fps. But, being a very compressed load, the bullets would push out during storage and jam in the rifling upon extraction dumping the powder in the action.

Moved on to 43.5 gr TAC, same bullet & case = 2820 fps 1/2 moa

Lapua brass. Was going to use a 210, but I’ve got 200’s and 9 1/2’s. I’ve got a bunch of magnums too, but don’t see the need. Was just going to use these Bergers to ring some 3-400 yard steel to fire form my brass for when I find some Scenars.

Nothing wrong with Bergers. Are yours the VLD target or hunting version? The Target ones have a thicker jacket. One of my favorite .308 powders is H4895 with better accuracy than Varget in my barrels. 44.5 grains under Sierra Palma, Berger Fullbore and Berger Hybrid 155s shoots great in Lapua brass and you could go higher. Check Hodgdon's site for max charge and work up. When you get the Scenars you may need to make an adjustment. I recall they have a noticably longer bearing length. I can verify that in the morning.

What would you say the case volume is on this load?

I haven't shot any H4895 for quite a while, but as I recall it was pretty close to the bottom of the neck in the Lapua brass, so I'd say maybe 95%. The only reason I stopped using it was availability. I think I may still have a little in the bottom of my last jug. You have me curious now...

A friend of mine used up to 47 grains under moly coated Hybrids, but that required a long drop tube.

44.5 fills the Lapua Palma case to a little below the neck but above the shoulder datum line.

I had to move on from Varget due to a compressed load scenario. Ater reading your post, I looked for H4895 at the Tulsa Show to no avail. TAC is getting me 1/2 moa for now, but I prefer one ragged hole groups.

IMR8208 can deliver great accuracy with single digit SDs, but has become hard to find as well. It peaked for me at about 43.9 grains with 155 hybrids. About 60 fps below my preferred velocity, but good enough.

In my 308 win tests, 43 5grs of H4895 powering 155gr Scenars is a noticeable improvement over 155gr Sierra palma match or matchkings. This can be considered a service rifle load. Mild mannered, but so accurate I don't think I can justify further trials.

I loaded those 155gr. VLDs with RL 15 in a straight out of the box Ruger American in .308 Win. Had a ho-hum Leupold 2-7 on it. At 100 yards, it put 4 shots into a slightly larger than .308" circle. I sighted it in, and my last 3-shot group before handing the rifle back to its owner measured 3/10".

I use Varget in my personal .308 Win. only because now, I have much more Varget than RL 15. That Ruger Scout prints very small groups with 165gr Ballistic Tips. I am tempted to try RL 15, but really, that scout rifle is meant to put meat in the freezer or wart off zombies, so I'm leaving well enough alone - for now.

Ended up finding a good enough load with varget. Killed multiple birds with one stone. I’m able to get these Bergers and a partial jug of varget off my bench. And my brass will be fire formed. They ring the plate at 300 yards just fine.

Out of the OP's powder list, I'd probably run RL15 and AR Comp. If he's just looking to burn up powder, and fireform brass, in anticipation for 155 Scennar's and only shoot steel at "300 yards", anything would work.

If that is your intent, anything will work. 300 isn't very far, unless you are trying to hit a 1" plate..
