Note: I made a post about this in the .357 Is Dead thread. But, Figured this news deserved a thread of its own.

For other custom handgun stocks fans:

I spoke with Robin at Herrett's today. They are no longer selling custom checkered stocks. I was wanting a set like those on their website and, if you read Mackay_Sagebrush's posts, like those on the Model 19 he gave his daughter for her wilderness guide trips. The lady who had been working at Herrett's for 42 years passed away unexpectedly recently. She had been the sole architect of the custom grips since the elderly gentleman that proceeded her passed away.

Robin told me they had tried to train several people under Dee over the years, but they wouldn't last long enough to become proficient and now they have no one else to do the custom work.

Customers can now only get the smooth stocks.

Sad, the passing of artisans. RIP, Dee.

Sorry news. I love those stocks on Mac's M19.

what a sad turn of events. I am sure someone will show up with machine made checkered stocks, but things will never be the same again

They wouldn't rework one either. Years ago I had Herrett's build a custom checkered set for my S&W 34 with a thumb rest. In retrospect I would be happier if that thumb rest wasn't there, but they wouldn't remove and refinish that left side.

Long time ago put Herritt Shooting Star grips on my first .357 revolver. Went to Ben Avery to test them out. First shot felt some pain in my hand. Looked at it and there were several cuts that were bleeding. The checkering was so sharp it cut the skin!

I'm saddened to see what has become of Herrett's. They used to be a very special place, now they just make/sell what everyone else does.

It is the way of the world today. Tyler T grip is another family business that struggles after the older folks involved are no longer around.

So, who is making custom stocks, now?
Preferably checkered.

I was just going to call Herret's - this afternoon, actually. frown

Ahrends Retro Target was probably my favorite handgun stocks/grips. Gone now... sadly.
