No, I haven't--but wouldn't test them in Test Tubes. Instead I use stacks of dry newspaper to test bullets that might encounter heavy bone, having four through plenty of experimentation that it simulates field results closer than anything else, both in retained weight and depth of penetration. You can also shoot more than one bullet into the same stack, providing side-by-side comparisons.

My educated guess, however, based on past experience is 286 Partitions would out-penetrate 320 Woodleighs, for the reason you stated: the larger mushroom of the bonded Woodleigh.

Mule Deer's loads (the whole subject of this thread) will serve you well.
Regarding bullet availability - if you want a very tough premium bullet that is currently available for cheap, you should buy a couple bags of the Nosler 250 g E-Tips that are still available as factory seconds on SPS (Shooter's Pro Shop). 10% veteran/LEO discount if you qualify. They're very well priced and will handle any of the big game you described wanting to hunt in the future. They shoot well in my rifle.

Good luck,
Rex

EDIT - also find and read Mainer_in_AK's thread on (I think) 13 years with the 9.3x62 in Alaska.

Thank you. I will continue to read through the thread. I did notice that some of the questions I had were answered further on in this lengthy thread. I'll look into getting some E-Tips. I expect that a box or two will last me and my kids essentially forever.

Edit - I will have to get a few more than that so I can shoot for proficiency.

Has anyone tried out the Lapua 185-grain bullets? I am not sure I have a real use for them, at least when compared with relatively cheap 285-grain Prvi Partisan bullets, but I am curious if others have tried them and have any load data for them.

I bought a couple hundred to "plink" and sight in my scopes riding on my Tikka T3 that's sitting in a B&C Medalist stock. A light load to replicate a 30-06 per se.

Yup. I use them for walking around field practice, not for wacking any game.

I use 52 gr. - 53 gr. of H4895 for 2,300+ fps. Could easily go much faster, but for what I'm doing it suffices.

That seems very modest.

Has anyone else loaded some of these up?

Edit - thoughts on using these bullets on whitetails?

Second edit - I found this site as well, in case anyone else is looking for a place to start with these bullets.

The lightest bullet I've handloaded in the 9.3x62 are cast 200-grain bullets used for practice/small game at around 1450 fps with Red Dot.

Otherwise the lightest "big game" bullet I've loaded was the 210-grain Cutting Edge Raptor, a monolithic designed to lose its petals. The best load was 66.0 grains of RL-15, for 2848 fps from the 23.6" (60 cm) barrel of my CZ 550.

The 232-grain Norma Oryx got around 2700 with 63.0 RL-15. Both grouped three shots well under an inch at 100 yards.

Thank you. I am looking forward to further experimenting with this cartridge.

Got a hold of some more new Lapua brass, checked my limited supply of 232 grain Oryx bullets and loaded up a couple dozen Lapua 185 grainers to sight in my Tikka 9.3x62 with a new scope.

The 185s loaded up with 53 gr. of H4895 printed about 3" higher than my old load for 250 grain TSX bullets but as to be expected. Like other Scenar style bullets from Lapua these too printed tight groups on my first outing at the range. VIHT lists a C.O.L. 3.091 inch for the 185 bullet much shorter than the TSXs listed at 3.205 in the Barnes manual.

I'm in for the draw of a moose hunt with a possible bear tag in NB. Either the Oryx or TSX bullets will do the job on the big game while any grouse fluttering about will get the 185ers.

The manuals state loads for 250 grainers with IMR 4895, 4064 and Varget to be around 56 grains of powder as maximum and I will slowly load up to those limits.

Anyone else have loads for the light 185 gr. Lapuas?
