John Prine died 4 years ago this week. Don't know if there are any other fans here but John and Steve Goodman were major influences in my life and so many others of my age. SO...I bought a couple liters of Smirnoff Red, a 24 pack of diet ginger ale, limes, lemons and 8 pounds of ice, and it's "Handsome Johnnys" and JP and Stevie this weekend. Thinking I might just feel young again for a bit..

"...And then I'm gonna get a cocktail
Vodka and ginger ale
Yeah, I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long
I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl
'Cause this old man is goin' to town..."

Thanks, John

Sounds like a fine way to spend the weekend.

I love John Prine's music.

Heard "Lake Marie" on the way home today

I'm unsure how I never heard of John until a few years ago when I heard the following song, but I'm catching up. I'll have to run out and get some more vooodka & ginger ale, and I'll join ya. Cheers Journeyman!

John and I go way back.

I think of this song, sang the first verse to my wife the other morning as she didn't know what the hell I was talking about the oatmeal staring me down.

The desert is a true treasure for him who seeks refuge from men and the evil of men.
In it is contentment
In it is death and all you seek

Back in college (2000’sh) a buddy was given a ‘Prime Prine’ cd. We listened to that album a bunch.

Saw him in Norman(?) Oklahoma in mid '80s and up here in Maine 20 years ago or so. He was an excelent showman, thanks for rattling out the memories.

I saw John at least a dozen times after Steve Goodman passed away in 1984 and I don't think he ever failed to dedicate this song to Steve. He had a line that was something like "Steve was such a great guitar player and entertainer that he could make it sound like I was playing the good parts but it was really him propping me up in the background." Good stuff.

Also, remember when Austin City Limits had watchable entertainment?

Two great songwriters there. I always enjoyed John Prine’s songwriting and performances especially with Iris Dement. My favorites are Paradise, Souvenirs, and Unwed Fathers. Steve Goodman wrote the perfect song in The City of New Orleans. It has special meaning for me as I live south of Greenwood Mississippi and would nightly hear The City of New Orleans from my open window in my upstairs bedroom. I have ridden it also. Steve paints a visual word picture of the sights and sounds of a ride on it.

Didn't mean to intrude on your thread...Placed on wrong music thread and it won't let me delete. Apologies...
