I have a Savage 110 varmint in 22/250 that I want to change to "20 Predator". So, I need to get a barrel and was directed to "urbanrifleman". The 20 Practical is based on a 223 cartridge necked to 20 cal. I guess I would need a new magazine and think it would be a direct swap? As for the bolt head/face I was told I could buy a "kit" to convert to the smaller diameter. Searching around a bit, I can't figure out where I would buy such a kit. Would Savage sell the parts? I know a lot of guys like the Savage for being able to replace barrels themselves, so parts must be available. I'd appreciate any tips on how to go about this project. Thanks in advance.

Some of the Savage 110's for short cartridges were built on long actions. Short and long actions have different length bolt head shanks, if my memory isn't going. smile

Thanks guys. Yeah, the 110 is a long action (10 is short). The 110 I have is available in 204, 223, and 22-250.
I'll have to do some more snooping. Does Savage sell parts? Thanks for the above links I'll look around.
A buddy found a used 204 in a gun store, but that would be too easy.
Thanks Nick

Not always. Sometimes the short action will be stamped model 110.

I also have a long action single shot in 22-250. It is about 30 years old, before Savage again started building a SA. The barrel is stamped model 12 V.

Yes, it's a turd. But it is kind of the small block chevy of turds. Any Fudd can swap barrels, change bolt heads, adjust head space and be off and running in a new cartridge with no investment in machine work or tools.

And the aforementioned turd always shot within 1/2 moa. It worked well for a cheap conversion to 22-243 AI.

We will soon see how it shoots as a 22 banbun. But first I have a 6.5-284 barrel fitted to the action to wring out. And a 6-284 barrel waiting in the wings.

Caveat being, the turd weighs in at about fifteen pounds with a Super Chicken 10X on top.

Yes, the same can be accomplished with a Remington and a barrel nut. But the bolt face is a slightly taller hurdle to overcome.

I know there are easier ways to go about this, and I'm not trying to build a custom prize winning target rifle. Just something to play with, maybe a year from now change again.
Other than availability, what I'm most confused about is whether or not my 110 is a long or short action. Then what bolt head do I need. When I see a 223 head listed, whether in stock or not, it usually has a "SA" in description which I assume means short action. But then looking at specs may say fits 10 and 110.
I'm probably over-thinking this, just don't want to order wrong parts. It looks fairly easy to swap parts and adjust firing pin depth.
I'm old and retired so I got time to tinker.

Savage chaged the nomenclature for all actions long or short to 110 a few years back. However, since you're working with a long action you're going to need a LA bolt head and PT&G is probably the best place to get one.

Pacific Tool & Gage Bolt Head List

Don't worry about the Savage naysayers, they were my first foray into custom barrels. They're fun to play with and you can learn a lot from tinkering with one. You'll eventually want something nicer to build, but they make nice prairie dog rifles as you can easily order and replace barrels as you burn them out.

I wouldn't order anything from Kiff direct, but if someone had his wares on the shelf,I'd procure second party. That WILL help you. Hint.

Just sayin'................
