Cabelas has a pretty good discount on this rifle in a few calibers. In doing some research on it for opinions, I don't find many. I don't hunt much past 200yards, but I would like to punch paper/steel out to 500 and maybe beyond with some practice. I have started reloading, so the 6.5-284 caliber isn't an issue (as far as needing to buy factory ammo). $799 plus some gift cards I have sure make it attractive to consider. Talk me into or out of it. Thanks!

If it has typical Savage accuracy, it should work great for what you want

Awesome do it all round, and Savage rifles are renowned for their out of the box precision. Go for it!

In my opinion, they aren’t exactly a pretty rifle but tend to have better than average accuracy. I’ve only owned a handful tho.

Had one in a 25-06 ten years or so ago. Shot just over 1/2" with 100 grain Ballistic Tips.
This one had the muzzle brake that could be turned off and on. Probably built differently today but I would still bet it has the usual Savage accuracy.
The last time that bear ate a lawyer he had the runs for 33 days!

have one, with handloads it will do 3/8" or better at 100 yards , shot it at 600 yards and it gave me a 1 7/8" group, cleaned it and put it away and havent used it since

There's no upside in the equation for the 6.5-284 chambering. a 6.5 Kreed' is easy to keep Supersonic to 1600yds++,at low tide. Hint.
Salvage Milk Jug stocks are schittier than most and you'll be well ahead of the curve,to source something wearing laminate. Hint.

For the same money or close to you can find a Remington 700 that will do as well or better, never handled a Savage Bolt Gun that didn't feel cheap. Rio7
