Well I'm officially retired. Notified my HR dept of my intentions 04/08/24 and last night was my "walk around" night. Went in on time and spent about 2 hours telling a lot of my co-workers good-bye. My good friends I'll see regularly @ the beach and playing music. I planned to retire about a year ago but I wound up staying. I did give up my exit "package" by leaving before April 2025 but I don't care. I've spent 25 of the last 28 years on 3rd shift. I am ready to live during normal hours. I turned 60 in November and have planned and worked towards this for a loooonnngg time. It's almost been surreal today, but it sure feels good!!!! I got out at 58, almost 14 years ago. If you can swing it, and assuming you’re not a couch potato, retiring early while you still have a little lead in your pencil is IMO the only way to go. Make room for someone else in the job market, have some fun. I probably spent half of my 40 years on some off tour, mostly 3rd shift, especially the last 15 or so. Being in control of your time is more precious than gold. Don’t get fat, and if you’re already fat, lose some!
What fresh Hell is this?

Congratulations on your retirement Enjoy yourself. I keep putting my retirement off , I keep saying I’m making too much money. But I think I might do it in July. I get extra pension credit. We’ll see.

Congratulations, enjoy it!
I retired on 31DEc for the 2nd time, 1st was from the army after 23 years.
It's taken a little while of getting into the groove of not having to be anywhere at any given time, but I'm getting used to it. Luckily I've got 80 acres, so there's always something that needs doing.

Thank ya'll . Got up @ 0500 this morning and went Bonito fishing with my neighbor. Left Beaufort inlet NC about 0615 and went south to AR-320. Thunderstorms ripping to the north but getting better for us every minute. My son text and ask if we were "in" the wx. No we're good. We caught 1 large gray trout, a bluefish and a black sea bass while jigging. No birds working or surface activity anywhere. Played around jigging for a while and gave up and put out a spread of clarkspoons. We made our way back to AR-315. Stayed on the troll and wound up with 15 Spanish mackerel one plump Bonito and a couple more bluefish. Fish, it's whats for dinner . All in all first day, Gonna have to call it a success lol. I will admit to wondering if I've made the right decision. I believe I have. Wife is 100% down with it so that's a major part of it. Also the Vice- President of operations gave me his personal cell # and told me last week if I had a change of heart, that my job was waiting on me if I wanted to come back. It's a totally different feeling not having to be anywhere I don't want to be at anytime.

Fetaherweight6555: Congratulations! I retired 27 years ago and if I had known how fantastic retirement would be I would have done it sooner! I hope you enjoy your retirement as much as I enjoy mine. Again good for you and congrats. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Good luck with the transition.

Congratz OP.
Will be 65 in another year. Can go any time but still enjoy my work and have my health. One of my co-workers of similar age says he's "two bad days away from pulling the pin." Funny but true. Being out of debt and having a pension ready to go makes a huge different in our outlook. We work because we want to, not because we have to.

now the adventure begins. SO many people wait to retire, wait until they are old and infirm, and then drop dead a year later. I hope being in the smart retiree group gives you a great time.
