Burn in a fire. When they cool off. Oil up rags or paper towells and rub them all over until the towells or rags don't show rust. Then oil well and bake in the.oven upside down so oil doesn't pool in them. When they cool wipe with more oil.

I like avocado oil because of it's high smoke temp. But otherwise, what has been stated previously is pretty good advice.

The collectors say to use flaxseed oil, but we've found that basic cooking oil will work too.
Cooking oil + salt (that's your abrasive) and a paper towel (or clean rag).

If your pan/pans have light rust as you describe, I personally wouldn't burn them in a fire and chance warping the metal. For light rust take steel wool, soap and hot water w/ a little elbow grease and scrub it out. Rinse and dry it off and put on a stove burner just to make sure good and dry.

Next, apply the cooking oil (I use grapeseed oil) while still warm/hot and rub it in with a cloth. After you oiled it well, with a clean cloth act like you are trying to rub off all that oil you just put on it.

The last step is put it in the oven at 450 - 475 for two or three hours and let it season. Don't take it out until it is cooled off. All the rust should be gone and the seasoning process well underway. Now go fry some bacon....

The wife would knock me over the head with her frying pan if she caught me grinding aluminum into her cast iron.

Soak them in a solution of molasses and water for a few days to remove the rust then season.
As noted above subjecting the iron to high heat in a fire or hi-temp oven can cause warpage or cracking.

I’ve restored a few like you describe. There’s a product called Evaporust that you can get at Tractor Supply. The stuff works.

I've heard the same thing about avoiding cooking in aluminum pots & pans... although I think lifestyle and genetics are better way to avoid than a one time ball of foil treatment.

I wouldn’t put that on something planning to cook on.

I cleaned up one in a fire, and have done others inside a hot gas grill. Wire cup inan angle grinder will remove anything left.

Wash with hot soapy water, wipe dry, heat on stove top to fully remove water.

Season with oil. Enjoy.
