Just that. A story that I was taught in grammar school. I read a little on the man last night. There is some controversy on how he died and where. He apparently was in prison when released for working in the tunnels.

Those who don't know our history call a signature a John Henry. Wrong. It's a John Hancock, named for the leader of the group who wrote the Declaration of Independence. He signed it with a big, flowery flourish and a fancy signature came to be named after him. I don't know when or where Henry's name got attached to it. It's entirely possible that Henry couldn't even read or write.

Remember when we couldn't wait for John McCain to kick the bucket?
Guy that runs the local market is named John. I've got a couple three friends named John.
How many Johns can you fit in a Volkswagen these days anyway?

He apparently was in prison when released for working in the tunnels. It happened right here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talcott,_West_Virginia Area once owned by ancestors, who settled that area before the Revolutionary War, in present day Summers County WVa. Other info on it : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Henry_(folklore) My granddad use to bounce us on his knee and sing that song to us when we were little.

I knew he was a real person but I had no idea what was real or legend. He was a lot younger than I imagined.

We lived kitty corner to him. He used to always help me get my chain back onto my bike sprocket. He put in a good word for me at Johns Manville in ‘46
He helped daddy dig a french drain. Then we all went pheasant hunting with Kristy Noem and had chocolate chrp ice cream at Al’s Diner with Potsy from Happy Days.
He used to raise some of them 6ft tall boar goats
