I posted this in the Lever Actions General section, but this is a better place;

I've written starline a couple times in the last few months about producing .300 Savage brass. I'm perplexed as to why they dont?...I assume the demand would be there.

I received a note today nicely written, that said they are of course backed up and wont be doing any new calibers for awhile. But even so, .300 Savage was not on the list of brass they might consider.

Is there really that much brass floating around? Or is it most of us just make it ourselves from .308?.

I wish they would reconsider.

Hornady used to, that's mostly what I use in my 300 with a smattering of WW for plinking loads. Not sure if they will produce it again or not; it's been off thier website list of brass for a year or better now.

SigSauer 308W resizes to 300 the easiest of any brands I experimented with for reforming, but case capacity is pretty diminished vs factory 300 stuff. 10% or so less volume iirc.

Does that mean less powder produces higher pressures and velocity?

Yes, I had to back my loads off quite a bit from what I was putting in Hornady brass.

I don't have notes handy for exact numbers, but the load of H4198 that gives me about 2630-ish fps with the 130TTSX in HDY brass was over 28 and super hard to extract from the reformed Sig, so I only shot a couple of those. I had to back it down a grain or two to hit the same velocity.

I don't really like using improper headstamps anyway, so I only fiddled with those until I came into more Hornady 300 brass.

Most of the .300 ammo I've shot in my life was made from .308/7.62 NATO brass. 'Tain't no big deal.

I don't believe so, have never seen them advertise it (have followed Starline site for along time), nor have I ever seen any personally or advertised for sale on any gun forum. When brass was still sort of cheap I bought alot of both 250 and 300 Savage brass for around $25-30 a bag, had a feeling it might go up and/or not be available. Hunch paid off. I have reformed .308 brass to both 250 and 300, but even cutting off alot of the excess brass from the neck and using my Forester crank trimmer it was a pain. Hate brass trimming. Bought some 25 and 30 caliber chambers for my Little Crow Brass Trimmer Chamber (Worlds Finest Trimmer) and was a breeze trimming reformed .308 cases. Hint--commercial cases are best as military brass has thicker walls (reduces powder capacity if needed) and harder to work with. Contacting Starline is a good thing, the more calls/emails they get may produce brass.
