I have been following the 284 and 7WSM thread which, interestingly, starts with a mention of the 7x57. Then there isn’t much about the 284W.

In these parts the 284W is very popular with F Class competitors. They load it to a OAL of around 3.2”. They tell me it is very easy to “tune” using H4350 & H4831sc which are great powders. Great for magazines limited to 3.4”. Plus very good brass is available.

Curious about results y’all get.
Thanks.

I've been fooling around with a .284 long range prone rifle recently. It is easy to load for and very accurate with the 180 and 184 Berger loads with H4831SC tried so far. Loaded 184 rounds are 3.340 inches.

Brass has become somewhat of an issue with Lapua having suspended their production for some time now. I believe Peterson is available, but I have never used it. Partly due to this I'm sure, many local F Class shooters have moved on to other chamberings.

I borrowed a friend's .284 in a prone match at Milan a while back. At 600 yards I fired a 200-12x with the rifle. Just prior, my friend steered his own rifle to a 200-14x. So that rifle shot 400-26x without a cleaning. I'll have to ask him what load I was shooting. Apparently it was some magical laser beam.

I always told myself I would own a 284 some day despite the naysayers that say it's neither fish nor fowl for LA or SA.

Mine can sure seem like a laser in the wind Chris. My buddy who got me started in LR prone shooting tells me he shot many 200s at 1000 yards with the rifle. Just added a bloop tube to try out a longer sight radius. If I like it I'll add one to my Palma rig.

I have a 284 Lightweight Strata from Rifles Inc. with a 23” barrel, 10 twist. It has a Wyatt box that allows 2.93” OAL. With Reloader 17 and the 140-gr Barnes TTSX, I get 3200 fps and about .6 MOA at 400 yards.

A 270 with the 130-gr SST at 3200 (roughly same G1 BC) lands only a couple inches higher that the 284 at 400 yds, less than what would result from poor trigger control.

back in the early '90s, my gunsmith (RIP) had a 6mm/284 Win. it was a Douglas barrel but i forget what twist. he built a stock for it and i think it was Jewell trigger for a Reminton m700. he shot a 87gr Hornady BTHP and i forget the powder and velocity but it shot bug holes 10 shot groups.

i wanted a 284 Win back then, but i couldn't afford. instead, i had and my oldest son now has a custom '98 FN Mauser in a Douglas featherweight 20" in 7x57.

I have a 25-284 that has been so easy to load for. Also have a short action that needs something done with it. I have thought the 25 may need a bigger brother.

Jerry Tierney's experience at F-class and long range benchrest reinforced my lust for a 284. He found that when the winds kicked up, the 284 held better than the 6's and 6.5's.

About 20 years ago Melvin built me a Model 20 with 28" barrel. Near 2900 with 175 Hornady, 3100 with 154.

I have built 284's, 6.5-284's, 30-284's and, a long time ago, 6mm-284's. If I'm honest I've never been a fan of the case. Predjudice, I guess, because it's not a terrible design. GD

I bought a new Remington Titanium when they first came out in 7mm-08, serial number 00042X. I immediately had it rechambered to 284, swapped in an aluminum trigger guard and aluminum bolt shroud. Rifle with a 2.5-8 Lupie weighs under 6#. I've taken lots of deer, elk, pigs, auodad, tahr, chamois, a couple ibex, a wolf and last June had a one shot kill on a bull eland. The magazine is short so my bullets begin tapering at the case mouth. The 140 gr TTSX with 52 gr of H380 shoots very well; I know the powder is temperature sensitive but I keep my shots under 400. I also have a custom 98 Mauser in 25-284 which I recently purchase because the wood was just too pretty but admit I don't have a use plan for it.

My only experience has been with Winchester Model 88 and Savage 99 lever action .284 rifles.

Like others here I have always thought that a .284 on a long (3.4”) action would make for an excellent long range rig.

So many projects, so little time.

I own a LA R77 that I bought used that was rebarreled in 284 Win Shaw barrel.
Shoots 120s, 140s, 150s and 160s all well. Nosler bullets only. Shoot everything
to near same poi.
It has killed whitetails, mule deer and elk. Never needed a second shot.
I think loaded with the 160NP, you can kill anything up to T Rex.
Had a 6mmx284 and still have a 6.5x284 also.
I think the case is cool and was ahead of its time. Just started out in the wrong guns.

Have had at least one 284 Win or multiples since 1984. Made a 25-284 and several 6mm-284s too. The case design was far ahead of its time. Minimal body taper, 35 degree shoulder angle and a rebated rim. Wildcatters went nutty with it when it first came out.

My original 284 Win rifle was a M77 tang safety in 6mm Remington. Mentioning this because when it was rebarreled to 284 Win, the setup fit and fed the 284 cartridge perfectly with no feed rail mods.

As time went on it got a McMillan ultralight stock and a timney trigger. The magazine was lengthened to accommodate an OAL of 3.050"

While this was my only rifle back then it was used for coues wt, mule deer, javelina, elk and varmints. Now days it is on its third barrel iinstalled by me using a custom reamer. Requires neck turning and throat is a 1 1/2 degree setup so a 168 Berger VLD can kiss the lands. This loading has taken two coues wt both over 450 yds using RL-17 with a velocity of 2935 fps.

These days it is only used for coyotes and javelina. Current bullet is a 120 Nosler BT with a healthy dose of RL-17 for a velocity over 3400 fps. While it has had many scopes on it, the current one is a 3-9 x 40 Trijicon accupoint with the green triangle/post. Last critter taken was a running coyote at 140 yds.

You asked.....

Really thought I wanted to get into a 284 Win target rifle, and still might for hunting, so have a new, unfired Krieger very heavy 27" stainless 1:9.5, trued 700 LA action, tuned trigger, BDL bottom metal and a HS Precision Sendero stock that has had the barrel channel opened up for this barrel down in my shop. Barrel has a "match" chamber and there's a bunch of brass neck turned and prepped for it. After a bad spinal injury, and subsequent surgery, doubt I'll be finishing it as prone is out of the question. So... if anyone is interested, please send me a PM. Was going to post in the classifieds until I saw this thread, so thought I'd start here. Please dismiss if I should have started in the classifieds instead.
