Jordan, when I use my big glasses in a pouch, I run the GB as it was designed. The little Gold Ring pockets are only used when going light.....

Take a look at the Slik Sling. Rifle rides behind the shoulder, immobile and secure. In contrast to other systems that flopped around in my face, hindered bino use and obstructed my view.

Old dana designs terraframe, terraplane and alpine packs have "bottle pockets" on either side of the pack bottoms...these happen to fit a rifle butt nicely, and there are a pair of straps up the side of the pack. When backpack hunting with a kid or two I find myself with rifles on both sides.

Gunbearer is the bees knees for when you're actually hunting with a backpack on, in places where you want to be using poles or hands for balance. For transport, on the backpack is superior.

Gave my gun bearer away. I hated the thing.

I use a Frankenstud and a rubberized strap that grips it well.

If hiking long distances, just strap to pack.

I have a kifaru gun bearer as well, but that frame pack has lots more stories.

Damn David, you must be as old as me. Poor enlisted GI here so mine was attached to a Camp Trails pack with a moose bag. Were you ever stationed in AK?

Bob,

Born when Ike was still the President.

Stationed at Eielson 1989-1992, moved to eastern WA and returned to Eagle River 1994 - 1997. Ended up moving back outside to OH be closer to family, eventually ended up a single father with three young kids, and moved back to eastern WA for a job and good schools. Which is where I still live.

We probably have the same pack, I aught to go up in the attic and take some pictures.

I bought the pack the year before my son was born which would be 1991, on some trip down south to Anchorage over the summer. Anchorage had the REI in Alaska, and Barneys was a little down the road if I recall correctly. It was a lot of money for a GI with a wife in college and a kid and one on the way, but everyone told me the Barney's pack was buy once, cry once. They were right.

I know the pack was rebranded something with a huge camo bag and a meat shelf, better waist belt padding and way better shoulder straps.

Maybe, but I've bought 2 or 3 of the things now. Put em on all my packs. I do like them.
