Looking at the two cartridges it would seem the .375 Steyr would be the way to go. What are the disadvantages of the Steyr to the 9.3x62?

Other than checking a 375 box where required in Africa, it seems splitting hairs.

Looking at the Hodgden manual the Steyr is much better in velocity with same weight bullets and reading the thread you showed rifles in the 9.3 can hold 1 more round and in some estimations feed better in a Mauser 98.

^^^^ ummmm….ill let folks with more experience chime in, but i think they’re far closer in reality, especially if you’re going to run the Steyr in a barrel under 23-24”. …that manual may also severely pressure limit the 9.3, as well.

I have both (along with 9.3x66 and 9.3x66) and wouldn't hesitate to pit either against anything from Cape Buff on down. There's a lot more variety in 9.3x62 ammo if that is a consideration.

In Hodgdens on-line manual the 375 Steyr is roughly 60,000 PSI while the 9.3x62 is roughly 48,000 cup. I don't know what the psi equivalent is to cup in this 9.3 cartridge. Would anyone have an idea.

Having had and hunted with a 9.3x62 Mauser in a CZ 550 Medium FS model . And had a 9.3x64 Brenneke built and hunted with. But not a 376 Styer yet. But also having a 375 Whelen Ackley Improved and hunted with it.
I can't find any proformance difference between the 375 Whelen A.I. and the 9.3x62 Mauser. Both shooting 250 grain X , TSX + TTSX @ 2500 - 2550 fps . They are super close to the same on game.
375 caliber bullets are easier to come by locally tho.

Just fer Schitz n' giggles......

"When Steyr initially discussed the new round with Cooper, they intended to call it the .375 Steyr. Cooper said they should instead call it a .376, to avoid confusion with the .375 H&H Magnum."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.376_Steyr

Disadvantage: I stand to be corrected, but to my knowledge, only Steyr chambers rifles for the 376 Steyr. I would suppose there are custom built rifles in that chambering.

Luv the Steyrs' for the SBS system, lock on safe, two stage trigger and accuracy. Plus they are so butt-ugly they are cool.

I am loading the Barnes 235 Gr. TSX in mine.

200 yds..

I've perforated a number of hoglets with mine. A couple were hit a skosh back of intended POA/POI. They did not run far and left a blood trail a blind man could wade in.

Anywho,

I've owned several rifles chambered for the 9.3 x 62 cartridge. Sako, CZ, and Blaser.

It is one of my favorite cartridges.

I mainly hunt critters under 350 lbs. with mine, but have no doubt it would do just fine on larger critters.

I do believe that one can get say 100 to 150 fps. greater velocity with the Steyr, using the same 250 gr. bullet in each, however employing either, unless you hit bone, you can eat right up to the bullet hole at the velocities they travel.

The recoil of either will not knock you into next week.

If I were to have to choose, I'd recommend you go with the 9.3 x 62 due to the ease of acquisition of factory rifles and ammo. Factory 9.3 x 62 is readily available and you can neck up 30-06 brass if you're a reloader.

With the Steyr you will have to have a custom rifle built or attempt to find a Steyr Scout or Pro Hunter. Brass can also be hard to find and expensive.

Good luck with your quest.

Best,

GWB

If brass was much more common for the Brenneke. I never would have traded it off. Tho I did not exhaustively test it on all manner of big game. I did kill plenty with it. . It was quite a 1 shot special. Bang and get out my knives. But the 62 Mauser and the 375 Whelen AI have been also. And the 9.3x62 and the 375 Whelen are more than 1 lb lighter than the 64 was.

As the 9.3x62 Mauser brass can be made from 06 brass. It would be my pick again between the 376 and the 9 3 x 62

I find Hornady's involvement with any "new" thing (like the .450 Marlin) to be highly biased in their introductions and promotions. For example, the .376 Steyr itself. While promoting it in their intro to it (9th Edition of their Handbook of Cartridge Reloading - pg 494) with these words: "The 376 Steyr is a powerhouse in a short, light rifle". Yet the loads presented are from a 25.5" barrel. Then they limit ALL loads for the .375 H&H in 300gr to 2500 fps, which they've been doing since Noah and family left the ArK! But that makes the .375 Ruger with a 20" look superior to the H&H with it's 24" barrel. Sorry, but I don't trust Hornady in their motives and promotions. Of course, we all know it's the bottom line that matters most. . . NOT just plain and simple truth. Want more facts?

I get 2500+ out of my 20" 376 steyr with 270 gr flat base bullets.
Since I have about 600 pieces of brass I don't think I'll ever let her go.

^^^manuals show 9.3 286gr to 2400fps at lower pressures and 300gr to 2350…..so it’s splitting hairs for performance. I’ve no ‘first hand’, yet….just been deep diving the 9.3, since it’s happy with any old ‘06 sized setup, for a build. By all means, smoke what you like. wink

I’m sure more of my normal hunting use would be with the lighter (230-250gr) bullets at 2600 or similar.
