When grilling burgers I put the cheese on top, then put the toasted bottom of the bun on the cheese, flip it over and put the top on.
That way, no one has a sticky mess when putting their toppings on.
Just that. I can take whatever you haters dish out.

I assemble a cheeseburger with cheese under the top bun on top of the patty but flip the burger to eat. The top of the bun is ususally thicker and holds together better. Condiments on the side without the cheese.

We use sourdough English muffins as burger buns.
ETA: hamburger buns are just too paffy.
