I just painted with Krylon a synthetic stock and then applied two coats of krylon clear matte on top of the paint.
Will that provide reasonable protection for the paint, or are there better alternatives to protect the paint.

I've done the same only I shot 4 or 5 coats of the clear. It has held up very well.

That'll work.

Make sure whatever clear is used its compatible with the basecoat. For instance, if you spray a lacquer base and apply urethane clear it will react and bubble the base coat. I would recommend using Duracoat in the future. It has a hardener and is very strong. Its easy to apply.

I did use Krylon and Krylon sealer.
Looks great.
Will see how it holds up.
