If you ever slept in a tent in sub-zero weather, you'd know.

Never used a hat, but I do cover my head when tenting without heat in subzero weather. With 15 to 20% of one's blood flow passing through the head, cover is a good way to conserve heat when out in serious elements.

Along those lines, my younger brother slept in the coldest corner of our childhood home and relied on a head covering blankie since day one. He's 62 now, and still insists on its presence regardless of location or climate. Blankie's always there whether it's out camping or in the Hilton. And we still tease him every time it comes out.

Purpose: Sailors used to wear hats with pompoms on them to protect them from bumping their heads in tight spaces or when the seas were rough.

It doesn't even need to be that cold. I always keep a knit hat handy when sleeping in a tent. If I'm cold during the night, more often than not, putting on the knit hat is enough to keep me warm. One can lose a lot of heat through ones head.

Jeez,

because one might have to answer a knock at the door and a man should never be seen in public with his head uncovered. Be Prepared, it's a thing.

My camping bonnet, hand knit in Ireland and brought to me from the home country ( Mom's side) by my dear sister. It resides in the truck so when out camping or fishing my head is always properly covered

On the knit cap thing

Why do Millennials wear them when it’s 90+ degrees walking down the side of the road?

Steve, ya got anything on this?

I wore my Midsouth Shooters Supply knit cap to the infusion lab, the juice is cold going into the vein. But my hydronic furnace keeps the house warm enough.

But mine doesnt have a ball on top

It would have kept your head warm when the fire went out.

Steve, ya got anything on this?

Why do people wear baseball caps when they aren't playing baseball?

Why do people wear cowboy hats when they don't have any cows?

The world may never know.
