Guys,
I can't remember what this Mark X was. Blue is great, drilled & tapped and stock is so so. It's chambered in 35 Whelen. Gun shop wants $375.00 so should I grab it. The bolt seems nice and slick. Opinions ! Thanks.

I have a Mark X I had rebarreled to 35 Whelen. I've used it on moose and elk. They drop like the hammer of Thor hit them.
In my opinion, the Whitworth Mark X action is a very fine basic Mauser. I think the price being asked is very reasonable as well. Provided the stock is in good shape and the rifling is good I'd jump on it.
Any chance you could find out who the previous owner was and ask how it shoots would be valuable. Not unlike talking with a car's previous owner to get a feeling on its condition. The shop has a record of who they got it from so they should be able to tell you.

Whitworth/Zastava rifles were sound but plain and sometimes a little rough. They sold for about $450 around here. Whitworth also sold separate actions, which were the only commercial Mausers you could get for a long time. They were not cheap, so most guys who built on them knew something about guns and did things right. Unfortunately, a lot of loonies also built customs on Whitworth actions, so before you buy, insist on having a smith cast the chamber to confirm that this rifle is a standard 35 Whelen and not a 35 Brown-Whelen or a 35 Whelen AI. The BW and the AI are good cartridges that outrun the standard 35 Whelen, but they can get complex on the loading bench. Plus, 35 Whelen dies are about $25. Dies for the other two are another $100 more, and can have a wait of up to 90 days since they're a special order item.

If Montana had a standing army, a 270 Win with Federal Blue Box 130's would be the standard issue.

Okie john +1. Zastavas can be rough, but they're solid Mauser 98s, they get the job done, and in 35 Whelen it's a find at that price.
