Danger of serious injury and possibly even death lie in wait for the fellow who knows no better than to fire Cartridge A in a rifle chambered for similar but different Cartridge B.
My barrel-maker friend Greg Richards, protege of and successor to Harold Broughton, built a number of special rifles chambered for the .22-6mm Remington rechristened ".224 Texas Trophy Hunter" (".224 TTH"). So far, well and good.
But somebody else's wires got crossed along the way, and Greg was startled to see some dangerous misinformation appear in print. To warn his customers of the danger, he sent the following letter to each shooter for whom he'd built a .224 TTH rifle. But he's concerned that the dangerous misunderstanding still exists, so I've agreed to post his warning letter here.
"September 8, 2000
"Dear Patron with .224 TTH Chambered Rifle - Serial # XXXXXXX
"In light of a recently published article in the September/October 2000 issue of The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters, titled 'The .224 TTH' on page 134 where the Editor and author, Horace Gore, makes the following statement.
"'We discussed several 'wildcat' cartridges that had a lot of merit, and finally settled on the old .224 Clark that we would rename .224 Texas Trophy Hunter (TTH).'"
"I feel it necessary to issue the following:
"WARNING
".224 TTH AND .224 CLARK AMMUNITION ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. ATTEMPTING TO USE .224 TTH AMMUNITION IN A .224 CLARK RIFLE HAS THE POTENTIAL OF DESTROYING THE RIFLE AND CAUSING BODILY HARM OR DEATH.
"The .224 TTH is the renamed 22-6mm Remington 'wildcat' cartridge invented by Texas shooting legend Harold Broughton. The .224 TTH is NOT the renamed .224 Clark as Horace Gore stated in his article.
"If you have any questions, please contact me at:
"Richards Rifle Company
"10501 N.
