Local had a 629-4 Mountain Gun for sale. 4" 44 Mag, No box or papers, and it's in 90-95% Condition - locks up pretty tight with no endshake, but it's been shot a fair bit - the cylinder locking lug slots are battered a bit. Paid $450 which was probably on the high side, but on the other hand, have been looking for awhile and if a better one comes along I can always sell. Will have to see how it shoots my pet handload - 19.0 gr 2400 and Leadhead 255 keith bullet....

I certainly have enjoyed my 629 Mountain Gun. I have not put that many rounds through it, but it goes with me often during hunting season.
I find that with good leather, it functions as a great CCW piece too.

I like mine. I have the recent polished blued steel version. The Mountain Guns are a nice line. I have the stainless .45 ACP version too.

Great all-around outdoor carry gun but not sure I'd want to shoot too many of your pet loads out of it. Ouch!

Do your self a favor and get one of the new Xframe Rubber grips that is available through Smith. Helps tame the beast ajust a tad bit.

From what I've seen asked anyway, at Gunshows of late, I don't think you paid on the high side. I'd think $600ish would've been more in-line with what they're bringing right now, so I think you got yourself a bargain.

Congrats, I've never had one, but wouldn't be surprised if one turned up in the gunsafe someday.

Tom - I think you did well. I never see them for five bills in my neck of the woods. Very nice revolver, probably one of the best guns S&W ever turned out.

It has the S&W branded Hogue Monogrips on it now. I am thinking of ordering a set of Herrett Jordan Trooper grips for it to see how they handle....

I'm trying to decide between the Jordan Trooper, the Roper and the Custom Shooting Master stocks. Do you like your Jordan Troopers, and how is the recoil with them?

Congratulations, Tom. I, too, looked long and hard and found a very nice one last year in about 98% or better. Frankly, I'd be surprised if the previous owner shot a whole box of 44's out of it.

My "pet" load for it is the old Keith load of 22 gr of 2400(older powder) under a 250 gr Keith bullet, Lyman 429421, I believe it is. I also shoot a 240 gr JHP over 24 grains of H110.

The loads I shoot are stiff. But, I didn't buy the gun to shoot mounds of rounds out of it. I shot it to see how well it shoots (which is most outstanding). Now it goes with me woods walking and hunting. I have great confidence in it's accuracy ablility with hard hitting rounds.

BTW, the X grips only helped a little.

My reference was to Cariboujack's post which had to do with the XFrame grips.

Bought those after my first round with some pretty stiff loads and there was definitely a noticeable difference after making the switch.

Well worth the little bit extra $.....IMHO.

Good luck.

I put Hogue round butt grips on my 629 Mtn. gun. They work great for me.

Yes, Magnumb,

It was XFrame grips I put on my Mountain Revolver. They did help, but just a little. YMMV

I have a pair of these, a first edition MG (my #1 favorite gun) and recently picked up a 629-5 MG. The new one has the X Frame grips with the little gel pad at the top of the back strap. I haven't fired this one yet, but I have found that the recoil is pretty fierce with paper in the sights, and almost non-existent if there is fur in the sights!

I favor a 250-grain Keith bullet in a Smith, but your load would not be pleasant in a Mountain Gun. Try a Keith 250 over 7 grains of 231 for about 900 fps or 10 grains of Unique for about 1,200 fps. Recoil is pretty mild.

Ooops!
My round butt grips are Pacmeyer (sp?) not Hogue. Anyway, they fit my had GREAT, and are very comfortable for recoil controll.
