I finally got dies for my custom Ruger #1 that has been sitting in my gun safe for 20 years. Had to special order the dies from RCBS. It is basically a .280 Remington with a 30 degree shoulder. The gunsmith who cast the chamber also was able to get a .280 factory load to chamber and fire, but the fit was very tight. By running a new case through the size die, the case chambers easily. I think I'll go the route of resizing new cases and fireforming, rather than using factory ammo.
Any favorite powders, starting load recommendations out there? The gunsmith recommended using a medium load from the load manuals for .280 Rem. for fireforming. I would also like to use this process for sighting in the scope I have mounted, at least to get it in the ballpark. As best as I can tell, this round will be very similar to the .280 AI, which has a 40 degree shoulder- basically a soft 7mm Mag. I intend to start with Remington brass, 140 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip bullets, and CCI large rifle primers.
