( just so you know, I have no vested interest in this, as my oldest is 35 :))

If you are 30 or older, you will think this is hilarious!!!! If not,
send it to your parents! They'll think it's funny!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious
diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what
with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning .. Uphill BOTH
ways .. Yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in
heck I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard
I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that...

I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and
notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my
childhood, you live in a dang Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kid s ; ;
today you don't know how good you've got it!

1. When I was a kid, we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know
something, we had to go to the dang library and look it up ourselves...
In the card catalog!! (Do you even know what a card catalog is? Didn't
think so!)

2. There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter...
With a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put
it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

3. There were no MP3's or Napsters! If you wanted to steal music, you
had to hitchhike to the dang record store and shoplift it yourself! Or
you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would
usually talk over the beginning and mess it all up!

4. We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone
and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it!

5. And we didn't have f ancy < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Cal ler ID Boxes either! When the phone rang,
you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your
boss, your bookie, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had
to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

6. We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with
high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like
"Space Invaders" and "asteroids" and the graphics were horrible! Your
guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And
there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen
forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and
harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

7. When you went to the movie theater there no s uch th ing as stadium
seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old < BR>broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just
screwed!

8. Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15
channels and there was no onscreen menu! You had to use a little book
called a TV Guide to find out what was on! And there was no Cartoon
Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you
hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons!

9. And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up, we
had to use the stove or go build a fire ... Imagine that! If we wanted
popcorn, we had to use that stupid JiffyPop thing or a pan with HOT oil
and Real popcorn kernels and shake it all over the stove forever like an
idiot.
10. When we were on the phone with our friends and our parents
w alked-in, we were stuck to the wall with a cord, a 7 foot cord that ran
to the phone - not the phone base, the actual phone. We barely had
enough length to sit on the floor and still be able to twirl the phone
cord in our fingers. If you suddenly had to go to the bathroom - guess
what we had to do..... Hang up and talk to them later.

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too
easy. You're spoiled!!

You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!

Regards,
The over 30 Crowd

Funny-my uncle was responsible for designing call waiting, back when he worked for Pac-Bell.This was the late 70s/early 80s IIRC.It was thought to be somewhat of a novelty at the time, but now folks seem like they can't live without it.

Funny thing is,no one in our family uses it,including him.Go figure....

What a difference a decade or two makes.

Who else here remember the slide rule?

Cleaning the contacts on your television tuner knob?

Replacing tubes?

Men polished their shoes, and bought blades for their razors

Things were 'Groovy' and 'far out'

And BTW, the 70s clothes were ugly the first time around.

Replacing tubes?

Or the machine in the hardware store that tested vacuum tubes?

Vacuum powered windshield wipers. When you accelerated or went uphill the wipers quit working.

Turn on the key, then push a button to start the car. But only the newer ones. The older ones had a foot pedal to push to start, after turning the key.

Headlight dimmer switch on the floor.

Four wheel drum brakes that didn't work after going through a big puddle.

Cars has synchromesh on only 2nd and 3rd gear, and 3 speeds was all there was. Trucks didn't have synchromesh at all. Double-clutching!

Removing a sparkplug and putting in a hose with a gadget on the end to inflate a flat tire. Inner tubes. Tire patching clamps to hold the flaming patch against the tube.

A big tube with water and straw clamped on top of the door window to cool the car. Water bags hanging from the side mirror.

Cars were more fun then.

Don't forget those dang points and condensers that went belly up every 5 or 6 thousand miles.
And laying on your back on cold concrete to adjust those drum brakes. AGAIN!
And spark plugs that had to be changed or at least cleaned and re-gapped every few thousand miles.

I seem to have forgotten how low maintenence our vehicles have become. I love my 07 GMC!!!
(But, don't tell anyone... I do miss the high beam switch on the floor).

I never use call waiting. If they call I figure people are smart enough to know a busy signal means I'm on the phone and call back. Where most people call and if you don't switch over it rings and they think your just not home....maybe it's just me.

Dimming headlight switch on the floor. I wish they would put it back there instead of the NORAD command center I currently have on one stalk on my new truck.

I'll bet I could still do plugs, points and condenser in my '67 GTX in an hour or less. Wish I still had that thing.

Had a 74 Pontiac to the day I sold it you could hear the "self adjusters" clicking as you backed out of the drive. Never did figure out what I did wrong but it stopped OK (most of the time)

Caller ID is a pet peeve of mine. Everyone now answers their phone after the second ring so they know who it is. A little surprise now and again would do us all good. Otherwise, get an unlisted number. laffin here.

Cable with 15 channels? Nope, 3 regular and 2 UHF. And we got off the couch to change the channels. grin

My kids don't have a clue. So every once in a while we go to the hunting lease where there is no power or water. But they still have every electric gizmo made.

The old cars had limitations, but...........
You could fix it yourself under a shade tree. You didn't need a 4 year degree and $20K worth of electron stuff to figure out that you're out of gas.

And the old cars had back seats. BIG back seats. If you took out the right girl, it was as big as a bed (heh, heh).

There was a remote control back then. It was called children.

I was my dad's remote control for many years. "Boy, get up and change the channel"

I grew up in southern California, and when I moved to Washington in the early 70s, kids were amazed to hear about all the channels we had: 2,4,5,7,9,11 and 13, plus UHF.

Those iron on patches for the knees of your pants. Don't know what they are made from but if we covered a hummer in them, no IED could penetrate.

Dimmer on the floor, neat trick my friend did in his "uncle jesse truck" was to wire the starter to it, no key needed just get in and tap the switch and she fired up.
