I have an older 700 SA BDL in 243 that I am trying to date. The serial number on the reciever does not have a letter in front of the numbers. (not Axxxxxx like my 30-06)
It has a short bolt shroud where the cocking piece sticks out when cocked. It also has an aluminum butt plate.
I will look closly at the rifle and try to find a letter for the date code, but I know there is not one on the action.
Based on my descripton, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> can anyone help to date the rifle?
Thanks, Fletch

I had the same problem with my 6mm Rem. I called Remington and they gave me the date. You can find their number on their website.

There was a discussion about the barrel codes somewhere on the campfire several months ago. As I recall, all of the barrel codes that gave the month and year of assembly were listed for the older 700s. I think that I cited John Lacy's book on the 700, so a search on "lacy" should find this discussion.
