I ordered a McSwirly for my Rem 700 Classic. It shoots too good to rebarrel just yet. Picked up a 17 fireball and that darn thing shoots great too. If only my 221 fireball 700 Classic shot as well. Maybe that will be my next project, a 221 FB or a triple duece. I'm thinking the 222 Rem..

I have a couple of Mauser actions, FN's, that I need to use up and I have two new reamers I need to try out. I've finally found a barrel for one. This first one is a .411" groove, one in 14" twist, Krieger #4 sporter contour, to be finished to 21". The chamber reamer is by Dave Manson and the design my own, based on the 376 Steyr case. This very compact case seems to be right at home in the Mauser M98 action with little modification needed. I necked this one to accept .411" bullets (405 Winchester, 450/400 N.E.) and changed the shoulder angle and diameter for better headspace control, yet uses the 376 h/s gages. The neck is .400" in length to provide a good grip for consistant ignition and to prevent bullets from being stuffed into the case mouth from recoil.
This caliber will duplicate the 450/400 ballistics of 400 grains at 2150 fps, in a short handy bolt gun. Actual predictions will be about 2250ps. It will also allow the full range of bullet weights from the 220 grain 41 mag revolver bullet to the 400 grain solid, including the 300-350 grains for the 405 Winchester.
.411" barels are like chicken lips, I was lucky to find a Krieger barrel instock, ready to be contoured to my specs and shipped to my anxiously waiting gunsmith.
Project number two will be my version of the 35 caliber on the 375 Ruger case. This is a fine case for future development and I've necked it to accept .358" bullets and pushed the shoulder back to give .360" of neck length. If my measurements are correct I won't need to ream the necks and it is relatively simple to form without special dies.
This one will duplicate the ballistics of the 358 Norma without a belt. McMillan stocks have been ordered for both and the 358 will likely wear a Dan Lilja barrel.
I also have custom dies on order, from Redding, for both calibers.
There are a couple of more but they are actually last years projects so they are old news as they are in the making now. One of these borrows heavily from Ken Howells 416 Howell design based on the 404 Jeffery case. I love this hobby.

Clark,
Good looking A-5, curious as to when you ordered it. Guessing 20-25 weeks lead time still standard?

Thanks, I like it. Just need to have the rifle that is going in it finished up so I can go shoot it!
Ordered Sept. 5, 2007, completed Jan. 29, 2008. So, right at 21 weeks if I counted correctly.
My next one was ordered Nov. 26th so should be due around my birthday in April.

Sweet,did you order sniper-fill or standard-fill? I see it comes in a 3.5lbs.
I ordered an A-3 and a R-model Ruger in early October, so maybe they will show up in March. The Ruger77/Lilja barreled action is ready (7mmRM), but the A-3 rig is still being pieced together for a 223AI Rem700. Probably 6-7 weeks out on the SS Pac-nor 1-8".
Now with even more aplomb

Standard-fill on this one. Probably should have gone with sniper-fill, but I can always add weight other ways, and it's hard to take it away. I can't wait to have this rifle finished.
The one that is really going to drive me to drinking waiting on is the one that Karl is putting together for me. Last time I heard from him, he was a year out on his builds. He got real popular, real fast and for good reason.

I bought one of the little, crude, made-in-Yugoslavia .223 Mini-Mausers (Charles Daly importer) some time ago mainly on a lark because it was a lefty.
It proved to be handy to carry, fairly accurate in spite of a very rough trigger - a pretty good walk-about varminter. I had the trigger worked on an improved it a bit but still a fair amount of creep remained but was 300-yd praire dog capable.
I guess I'm in the process of trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear but I sent it to James Anderson in S.D. (formerly with Dakota) for a rebarrel to 223AI stainless. He'll add a lefty 3-pos safety, a timney trigger at 2, 1/2 lbs, a custom bolt handle, and all steel floor metal and of course black matte all the metal. All though the action wasn't too bad he will polish and smooth, lap the lugs, and blue-print the action too. My last splurge will be a XXX walnut stock and glass bed the action well. Should end up about 5, 1/2 lbs a little heavier than when it left
We'll see.

I am thinking hard about building a 9.3X62 from a M70 FWT 30-06. Lilja barrel(Thanks JB!) and a McMillan stock. Leupy fixed 4 and Talley Lightweights for the sights...

Turning at least one of my two Chuck Daly Mauser actions into a real rifle. Haven't got all the details worked out yet but it'll either be a 9.3x62 Mauser or .338-06 AI in a Wenig laminated stock. Looking at ER Shaw and Pac-Nor for the barrels and some of the 'smithing.

Waiting for my Predator based 300 WM connected to a Krieger #6 fluted,in 1-11 twist 28". Will be pillar bedded in a Mcmillan Rem Hunter in Desert Camo and action with barrel coated in coyote brown. Jewell trigger to start the fireworks. Stiller base and Seekins rings waiting to hold the Leupy Mark 4 6.5-20. This will be my tweener rig( between a carry and sitting config). Started assembling my sit rig in 338 Lapua. Ordered Stiller Tac 338, Broughton 30" fluted 1-10 twist and Jewell trigger. Hope I like the first Jewell cause I just ordered the second. Will be ordering Badger DB metal with 2 clips and a Mcmillan A-5. Sorry, got carried away.
Just because I am wandering around doesn't mean I am lost.

Gonna wildcat my Marlin 1895SS 45/70 to 348/45-70. Less recoil and will be fun in the woods ta boot.Probably have to have a reamer made 'cause after two years of searching I have not been able to dig one up. Anticipate 200 grainers at 2500 or very close. Will look very similar to this when done except for a longer 23" tube.Deer thumper.

Going to put my Model 70 classic stainless 7 Rem Mag (24" barrel)into a McMillan Fwt stock (on the way from Rick) and the same gun in 270 Winchester into a Supergrade Edge I have. Both rifles shoot less than 1" regularly for 3 shots with little load development. Both will wear 3.5x10x40 leupolds (one duplex, one #4 reticle) and Talley lightweights. 270 will go 8lbs 1 ounce and the 7 mag will be about 8lb 7ounces. I also have a Husqvarna 4100 in 7x57 that will get some load development to cover off the closer cover stuff or when I have some long hikes! It's wearing a 3x9 vxll, though I'd like to get a 2x7 for it. I've tried the very lightweight rifle thing (6 1/2 lbs), just doesn't work for me when it comes time to do some serious shooting at a distance!
