I have a sneaking suspicion that this guy wasn't the complete idiot his past statements would lead one to believe. He spent a lot of time in close proximity to bears and emerged unscathed (except for one time)--he musta known something about bears. I'm not laughing about the man's--and his girlfriend's--untimely demise but you have to admit: the irony is priceless.

Grizzly protection activist mauled by bears

Reuters--October 08 2003 at 04:06AM

Anchorage, Alaska - An advocate of grizzly bear protection and his camping companion were mauled to death by one or more bears in a remote part of Alaska's Katmai National Park and Preserve, officials said on Tuesday.

Killed were Timothy Treadwell, 46, and Amie Huguenard, 37, both of Malibu, California, said the National Park Service and the Alaska State Troopers.

Treadwell was the founder of Grizzly People, an organisation devoted to the protection of grizzly bears and their habitat. According to the group's website grizzlypeople.com, Treadwell's practice was to travel to bear country without weapons.

Treadwell, a former drug addict, was featured on the website of actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio. According to a biography on the site, Treadwell beat his addiction by spending time in the Alaskan wilderness, where he developed his fondness for bears.

Treadwell made a practice of getting within inches of the animals
The co-author of a book entitled Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears In Alaska, Treadwell appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman and travelled the country to lecture on the bears and their environment.

It was the first fatal bear attack in Katmai for at least 15 years, the Park Service said. The park is known as one of the world's premier sites for viewing huge brown bears, the coastal cousins of grizzlies, as they feast on salmon.

The deaths were discovered when an air-taxi pilot flew to the site on Monday afternoon to pick up the campers. He found the campsite damaged and a brown bear atop what appeared to be a human body, eating the remains.

When park rangers and state troopers flew to the remote site to recover the bodies, they had to kill two aggressive bears that were threatening them, officials said.

The Park Service has closed the area to visitors and is investigating the deaths.

The service had cautioned Treadwell for several years about his bear-safety practices, spokesperson John Quinley said.

Treadwell made a practice of getting within inches of the animals, but the Park Service recommends a 50m distance, he said.

From what I've read I'd say he had no respect for the bears. Bear attacks are fairly rare, and asside from Polar Bears, most bears under most conditions don't look at humans as a food source. It's no suprise that all the time he spent with the bears, doing what real bear experts consider stupid things would have deluded him into believing that they are just nice big friendly furry animals. He viewed bears where they are normally well fed, so they would normally not be any bother to people.

He probably recieved the same high from being so close to the bears that he did when he was on drugs. But just like any junky, an od is only one step away.

What saddens me is the loss of the bears.

I find it humorous that his "protect the bears" persuit actually cost the lives of two wild bears, due to his arrogance. Couldn't have happened to more ignorant couple. Flinch

This is the lead on the story from NBC news:

"LOS ANGELES -- A self-taught bear expert, who once called Alaska's brown bears harmless party animals, was one of two people fatally mauled in a bear attack in Katmai National Park and Preserve -- the first known bear killings in the 4.7-million-acre park. "

The whole story is here:

No weapons were found at the scene, Park Service spokeswoman Jane Tranel said. Firearms are prohibited in that part of the park.

Hmm, But the rangers had guns? Think the family will sue?

The bear in that aera of the park are friendly and non-aggressive. HA

Unfortunately, that guy's attitude was/is typical of somebody who's irrational attraction to the wildlife overwhelmed his own common sense. These people live in a la-la land where the animals are on par with people, or even of higher value, in the scheme of things.

It is also sort of a self-worhsip thing, because he also fantasized himself possessing some quality of understanding and communication with the animal that was "above" even the noted experts. Pretty sick all the way around, right down to the resulting destruction of the unfortunate beasts.

I bought this guy's book,Among Grizzlies, a month or so ago. Here are a couple quotes from page 41: "Well, sir, you're not going to believe this, but I'm here to save you and all your subjects." "Did you know that some humans kill beautiful bears like you for sick thrills? " "Well, that's not going to happen while I'm here, sir." BTW he was talking to a bear here.

After reading a little about Ms. Goodbear, Scruffy,Booble, and Mr. Chocolate, I quit the book. Actually i hurled it across the room.

I started to can this rag, but decided to save it-- just in case. Glad I did.. Ya know, I guess I'm kinda old and kinda callous. I don't feel the least bit "sorry" for a guy who is drunk, driving 90, and spreads his dysfunctional gray matter all over his windshield. I won't shed a tear for "ol Timothy. I'm hoping this guy was sterile. I DO feel sorry for the bears.

I'll post some more of his "wisdom" from this book later this evening.. Skipper Miller

Here's an excerpt from MSN News:

That same year Treadwell was a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman, describing Alaska brown bears as mostly harmless party animals. End Quote.

I guess Treadwell and Huguenard were the Or Derves (spelling) for these two party animals...

Having (a) spent some time in close and familiar proximity with the Alaska Range grizzlies and the Kodiak brownies, (b) photographed many of the former and live-trapped a few of the latter, and (c) survived a mauling by one of the latter, I have just two comments:

The man was a fool not to learn and respect those bears' nature.

The Disney and similar "nature" films bear a heavy responsibility for his foolish attitude and his death.

Hard not to see the intrinsic comedy in this one, but I DO feel genuine sorrow for the girlfriend.

Might feel some sympathy for the guy too, after all once you get fame and recognition for being the grizzly guy how do you ever back off from that? It's like you'd HAVE to crawl around the big bears year after year, trapped by your own fame.

On the other hand, this guy's actions were apparently influential in the previous deaths of others elsewhere seeking to copy what they had seen him do on TV (see link up thread).

Perhaps the REALLY sad part being just how many people buy into the whole "Animal Planet" mentality this "ecowarrior" and his cronies project.

Having read the link, I gotta wonder if this guy's last words were "I love you I love you I love you I love you" repeated in a singsong falsetto...

I wonder if their life insurance policies payoff for stupid acts above and beyond the call of ignorance..

Maybe it will teach future bunny huggers to stay away from wild, toothy, clawy creatures..

An ancient limerick comes to mind --

A lovely young lady from Niger
Smiled as she rode on a tiger.
At the end of the ride,
The lady was inside
And the smile on the face of the tiger.

-- also the story of the fellow who hankered to wear a bear-skin coat -- who met a hungry bear -- and both came away satisfied.

As I said on the Alaska forum when this came up. It's a shame he can't write a new book as he now has real inside knowledge of grizzly bears.

As a former pilot, I saw some guys do some pretty stupid things with airplanes... and a few of 'em got themselves killed in the process.

While I wasn't happy they were dead, I didn't feel that much sorrow for them either because they knew better than to do what they did... but they did it anyway... and... they died as a result of THEIR poor judgement and doing stupid things... and THAT was on them!

Where I had a problem was when they took trusting, non-pilot passengers WITH them in the airplane... and got them killed as well.

I don't get any smug satisfaction that he got killed by the very bears he claimed to know so much about, but I can't say I feel "sorry" for the guy... he got what he laid himself open to get.

But the girl that was killed by the bear(s?) was probably in love with him and trusted his judgement (HA!)... and his views got her killed as well. In my mind, he's responsible for her death. She may not have known any better, but he SHOULD have!!!

It's one thing to get yourself killed, but it's an entirely different matter to get someone else killed due to your ignorance.

We've seen a good sized bear walking down the dirt road 60 feet from camp on several occasions over the past few years. After this tragedy, maybe the guys at deer camp won't laugh at me quite as hard as they have "snickered" at my caution in previous years when I insisted on taking the camp .30/30 or the Smith & Wesson Model 629 .44 magnum revolver with me to the outside "john" located 40 feet from the cabin at night when "nature called", eh?

Unlike Timothy... I don't TRUST wild animals... particularly ones that can EAT me! AND, unlike Timothy, I have NO DESIRE to end up as the entre on some bear's menu.

'Nuff said...

Strength & Honor...
