I took a brand new rifle and scope to the range today. It was bore sighted only. Using Winchester 150gr. power points my first shot was dead on for windage and 3/4 of an inch high at 50yds..Good enough to move to the 100yd. benches. They were all occupied, so what the heck, it should be close enough to try at 200. Those benches were all empty. Well three shots later, I'm absouluty astonished to find a measured 1 inch c to c group 1 3/4 ins. low and perfect right and left! After bore sighting I never touched the scope! I'd bet that doesn't happen once in 10,000 times. It was a new Marlin MR7 3006 and a Leupold 3x9 VX2. It was a pleasant surprise.

i've never had a boresighted rifle that was anywhere close to that... usually doing good to be on paper at 50.

I have never had one that close but most are within 3" or so and I have never had one yet that wasn't on the paper at 100 yards.

I had it happen once. I bored sighted a .308 Browning lever action and took it to the range after installing a new Leupold scope on it. A squirrel jumped up on a rock right at 100 yards. The owner of the rifle was with me and he said, "Shoot it!" I was also shooting 150 grain Winchester power points (great ammo and cheap, by the way). I touched off the round and the squirrel disappeared in a cloud of red mist. I handed the gun to the owner and said, "I think your gun is sighted in." He couldn't believe it. We put it on paper and it was indeed dead on at 100 yards. Flinch

I had one not quite as good as this, but pretty good! I developed some loads in a 338 Win Mag at 100 yards. The groups were way off the desired POI. Went home and decided to go to a 300 yard range for final sight-in. I measured the center of the groups versus the point of aim and from a ballistics program figured and made the necessary changes to the scope.

I set up my target at 300 yards using a 3" blaze orange bull. First shot, dead center in the orange bull. Second shot, barely any paper separating it from the first shot but at 7 o'clock. Third shot at 1 o'clock, with a group of 1.77" without ever having touched the scope.

I bought a new target and saved this one.

Tom,

Yes, Indeed! Lightning does strike twice. Not in the same place, tho'! Yesterday I went to the range. I had a Sucks 700 ADL action that was Metalified. I sent the original .30-06 bbl from that action to Al Siegrist and had him bore it to .338-06. Took it to another gunsmith and had him shorten it to 21". Took the bbl to a third 'smith and had him send it to Metalife to be coated to match the action. When it came back we screwed it together and bolted it into a factory Rem FS stock (Brown Precision???) Weight it! 6 1/2 lbs! I brought it home and mounted a 6x42 Leupold in Leupold DD rings. Weighted again. Rifle scope, sling and 3 rds ammo. = 7 lbs, 8 oz. Boresighted and took it to the range.

The very first shot @ 50 yds cut the X-ring. I shot 2 more just to make sure. Didn't even measure the group. Shot 3 shots @ 100 yds. 1 1/2 in high and 1/2" left - all in one hole. 4th, 5th, & 6th shots over all group size: .693" subtract .338 = .355" The Load? 49gr IMR-4064 in Fed match brass WLR primer and 225gr Win. (Hornady ?) bullet.

I guess you know which rifle will accompany me on opening day of season

I have two rifles hit right at the point of aim as you described after bore sighting. My gunsmith says this is what happens when is aligned from the factory, barrel, Scope mounting holes, rings, bore etc. I guess every now and then even the large manufacturers get one right...

I agree it more of an exception than the rule.

It would be nice to see some of the other smiths kick in with their opinion on this phenomenon.

Almost all the rifles I've zeroed lately have been within 2-3" of zero at 100 after boresighting only.

I always figured I was just really good at boresighting. Kinda wished I were good at throwing footballs or rapping instead -- you know, something that would buy more rifles and hunting trips.

Can't say as I ever been closer than 5 or 6 inches at 100 yards after bore sighting on the bags. Just want to tell 9_3 GUY that his FS stock is indeed a "Brown Precision". I have one here that came on a 7 Mag ADL/FS that Remington says was built in '87.I'm looking for something to put into it at the moment, as the original action now wears a 375 Wtby barrel and sits in a BDL walnut handle. They are a truly great stock.Have you ever weighed yours?
