Youngest son had been tagging along with me for several years, and had learned to shoot well with his .22 rifle. We went through Hunter Safety together (I figured after 30 years a refresher might do me some good too) and he learned to shoot my old 6mm Rem in a smaller "youth" stock. We did the spot and stalk on a small band of mulie does, and ran out of cover at about 275 yards. From the bipod, he put one handloaded 95 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip through the lungs, tearing up the heart pretty good too, and the bullet exited, shattering the off-side leg on the way out. Nice shooting! I was grinning at least as much as my son, and I've got to confess that I love showing this photo. He's grown considerably and the same rifle is back in the original full-size stock now. It's been a fun road, watching him grow into a competent young hunter and rifleman. I hope some other kids heading out for their first hunt this fall will enjoy seeing his photo! Regards, Guy

Congrats to all! Nice job Dad.

Guy-thx for sharing, this kind of stuff is what really makes the "Fire" for me.
Gun gack and ballistic minutia and the like only get me so far.
This is mucho better!
Thx for sharing

Mr. GuyM: I posted a response to your post in General Big Game. Sorry I took so long there. A great big tip of the hat to you sir, for both taking your son hunting as well as taking the Hunter Safety class with him. Nice deer BTW! Ive had a few parents take the Hunter Safety class I teach with their kids and every time it has been a very positive experience for parents and kids. I wish more parents would do that as it shows real commitment to the children. Very well done sir! Dwayne

Wow! Thanks guys - I didn't expect so many responses. The lad and I are headed to the range later today for some practice, and maybe a little scouting this evening or tomorrow as well. I think Grandpa is coming along to the range with us too. We plan on getting out to the range for an hour or two every Saturday in September and October before deer season starts... It's a lot of fun, and he's getting to be a better shot with that old Remington too.
Regards, Guy

Great photo. I have my first one sitting on my dresser in a nice frame. No other trophy will quite match the first one.
