I have never encountered anything like this before. My 1990 Jeep Cherokee (4.0 L 6cyl, 4 spd. automatic) is, for lack of a better description, stuck in Park. I cannot budge the shifter into any other gear.

Any insights or ideas will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

HBB

Is it parked on a hill? I know it sounds like a dumb question, but more than 1 guy has got caught that way. The trucks weight keeps pressure on the pin that locks the axles in park and you can't shift it until you relieve the pressure

Not sure about a 90 Jeep but some newer vehicles will not shift out of park unless your foot is on the brake. Sometimes the sensor goes bad and it will not shift.

Most people don't really want the truth.

They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

Its parked on a slight downhill grade but nothing too steep.

I'll check that this morning.

Thanks

Before you get spend much time checking other possibilities, try relieving the pressure by pulling it uphill with another vehicle. If that's the problem, it'll only take a slight pull. If that's not the problem, you're only out a few minutes of time.
