Great photograph! Hand colored pics are some of my favorites. What part of the country did it originate from? there's an awful lot of foliage still on the trees and all around.

Gary, i have a model 1894 winchester rifle in 32-40 that was my great grandfathers, it has a lyman tang sight , a semi-jack front sight, and in the rear sight dovetail a number 5B combination sight!! flip it up with the tang sight and you have a real quick low light sight (dark) . 1906 era, i think food on the table gun, he was a logging boss for the johnson lumber co, in johnson N.H., maybe some ended up on the camp tables!! Gary, I bet that it would be like shooting anything with a tang sight and a #17 Lyman with the peep aperture in it. I get great groups using that so I imagine that front sight on a 99 would do just the same.

I don't know, I think if that sight was any good for hunting, you'd see them mounted on rifles. I don't see why it wouldn't work fine up close, but when the range starts stretching I think you'd want something with a more definite aiming point. It would probably work OK on hostiles though.

Should work real well for shooting round targets.
