Please pray tell me where I can get a NIB Vanguard Sub-MOA for $600!!!! About the cheapest I've seen is $800.

imo, the 270 win is just fine for elk if you can shoot. no telling how many elk are taken each year with a 270, plus it is the perfect deer cartridge. kimber, ruger, vanguard, tikka, 700 sps, etc. really doesn't matter. just get one that "fits" the shooter. throw in some 150gr partitions and you are set to go.

Just to re-iterate what others have already said, the Kimber Montanas in 84M, 8400 WSM and 8400 LA all have distinct feels to them, and it would be difficult to pick one out for someone other than yourself.
I would select the .270 WSM over the .270 Win only because the WSMs fit me much better.

Another plug for the 84M or 8400 over the long action Kimbers. I had one in 270 and traded it off without ever shooting it. It just wasn't in the discussion with my 7-08 or 300 WSM in terms of how it balanced and handled.

I wouldn't be at all afraid of a 7-08 in a Montana. Mine is a tack driver and my favorite rifle, and if you are looking for 270 Win performance in a much nicer package with less recoil, the 7-08 with 120's is the ticket, and one can still go heavier as well.

I love the 270 Win and have a couple which I really like, but it's not the route I'd go in a Kimber.

The other option, the 270 WSM is a winner, too, but my 7-08 just kills everything I point it at and recoils like a 243, so I'm biased.

Nice thing you're doing for your friend - it will make the rifle much more special, and hopefully you can break it in right on your elk hunt.

I would think the statistical chance of getting an elk is much worse than getting a Kimber that shoots...

I played with one Montana 270 WSM that was an accurate rifle; it was not mine.

Well here is what I did. My buddy and I went to the gunshop today to pick up a Weatherby MOA, 25-06 that I ordered a week ago. The owner of the shop told me that he hadnt ordered it yet because when he went to place the order there had been a price increase from his supplier over what he had quoted me.

While we were there my buddy fondled a Kimber Montana in 270 WSM and on the way home told me that he was going to order himself one as soon as he had the loot saved up.

When I got back to the house I called the gun store and ordered it for him and a Kimber 8400 classic in 25-06 for myself. I will pick them both up next week .

Thank you all for the advice.

I have no experience with a Kimber but I can absolutely assure you that a .270 Winchester can kill any Elk that ever walked. I would recommend a Nosler Partition bullet also. Good hunting!

Great gesture greyhunter. I'm sure the fact that the gun is a gift from his good friend will ensure that it is a keeper! Let us know if he is surprised.
