I tried cast in my Ruger #1 .458 Cannot remember the mold number but it was a similar to a slightly shortened version of the lyman Postell bullet with a gas check. At 25 yards they hit the target sideways. I've got to try a few more and find something that works

Cast bullets should be sized about.001" over. A bullet with that much yaw has other issues that have to be found. 45 caliber rifles have a pretty good history of shooting cast bullets accurately.

Got to shoot the .458 today with factory Hornady loads (500gr @ 2300fps)!!!! I was expecting pain and misery, but it actually wasn't bad at all!!! Don't get me wrong....you know when the gun goes off, BUT...it didn't smack me like my Model 70 in 375H&H. It could be a number of things like stock design or body make-up, but I'm REALLY happy!!! I only put 5 rounds through it today, just to get a feel for it, but I hope to do some accuracy testing in the next couple of weeks. I imagine 350 grainers would be downright pleasant.

Take Care All!!!

You could try an 8 bore. When you run out of powder you can use a slungshot.

Stump Buster, I have a Ruger 77 in .458 Lott. I reload my stuff and shoot it quite a bit.I am good for 10, 500 grainers without a recoil pad before my better judgement kicks in,its the next five rounds that will get your attention!

I wear a recoil pad on the range and shoot off hand I can put 25-30 rounds down range in an afternoon. Its a great stress reducer splitting logs and mangleing steel plates at 100 yards.

I load the 350 to 2700fps with tac, and the 500s to 2300fps with 3031.

I would go for it. You never know when you will be invited for a once-in-lifetime hunt for Wascally Wabbits. Should be good with the right loads for all lesser game too. I like unconventional rounds like this so I would definately do it if you really want the gun and want to reload for the different circumstances!

Some years ago I had a really nice .458 Win. Mag. Model 70 and wanted to hunt with it so used it on deer with reduced loads. it performed like a 45-70 and was a blast to hunt with. One morning as I was eating breakfast at a local market after the hunt a young man entertained us all with stories of how powerful his 7mm STW was. He asked us all what we used and when he asked me I just handed him a .458 round. The look on his face was priceless!
