Larry Brown, some years ago in a article on the 16 ga. Used the old cliche "Queen of the uplands, hits like a 12, carrys like a 20" I had never had an interest in anything that wasnt a semiauto 12ga.

That article started a whole new way of hunting for me leading to a Ithaca nitro special then a AH Fox in 16. It actually really changed my way of hunting and opened a whole new way of spending money to me.

I rember an article by Seyfried where he stated that there are two moving parts on a handgun, the sights and the trigger and if you can move the trigger without moving the sights you'll do just fine.

I was reading Field & Stream at the doctor's office and a letter to the editor complained that Remington's new 16 gauge 870 didn't make the list. Phil Bourjaily's response was that it didn't make it because "screwing a 16 ga. barrel on a 12 ga. frame smacked of greed and laziness"

Coming from a poorly thought of rag, considered to be an "info-mag" and its editors "pimps", I found that to be remarkable.

"Big punch in a little Case" Jack O'Conner on the 7 x 57. The man had a way with the word.

I was rereading my copy of Big Bore Rifles And Cartridges and came across Layne Simpson's piece on the .35 Remington where he said, ".. If any difference in killing power between the 170 grain 30-30 and .32 Special and the .35 Remington were somehow converted into TNT and packed into the nostrils of a chipmunk, it would do a poor job of blowing the little animal's nose."

Venerable this, venerable that. Usually directed at the '06. I've seen it so much that when I come across it in an article, that's it for that article. I stop right there and move on. And it does'nt matter who wrote it.

It really was 'vulnerable' NOT 'venerable' in the article. Funny thing about it, shortly before I saw that line I was reading something by, I believe, Mule Deer to the effect that most gunwriters refer to 'the venerable 30-06' without knowing what venerable means. I've often wondered what would happen if we on the fire kept a list of how many articles include the term '30-06' without the word 'venerable' preceding it at least once.

I agree with a lot of what other fellows wrote here.

The more I read Elmer Keith - the less I wanted to read Elmer Keith.

He sure seemed to have A LOT of trouble killing big game with "normal" cartridges.

I don't know why I've found the .22 CHeetah so good on deer, and the 25-06 and 7mm-08 so good on big game.

I guess, just like Jack O'Connor was, I must be a lot luckier than Elmer Keith was. wink
