I am looking for an economical bolt action in .308. I have a J.C. Higgins in 30-06 that shoots really well, I believe it is made by FN on the 98 Mauser, is that right? My question is, did Sears have a .308 available in the same action? Have any ideas on a good quality bolt action that I can get at an economical price? Also is the length of action the same on a .308 as it would be in a long action?? What was the difference in the model 722 and 721 Remington compared to the model 700s?

Thanks
Sonny

How much do you want to spend?

722s in 300 Savage can often be bought in very good condition for $250 +/-, some as little as $200 if you don't mind refinishing the stocks.

788s in most calibers can also be bought pretty reasonably, most of the time, and are noted as being very accurate factory rifles.

Sonny,

You can see at the bottom of the list that I posted that Sears did sell a .308 but it was supplied by Husqvarna not FN. It was a long action receiver with the bottom metal, follower and rails modified to accept the shorter .308 cartridges.

The Rem. 722 was a short action centerfire receiver similar to the Rem. 700 SA but made prior to the 700's. The Rem. 721 was the long action version before the 700's. The 722's and 721's are good receivers usually available at reasonable prices.

Used rilfes can usually be found at more reasonable prices than new or look into Howas and Savages for good pricing and quality.

Both of you fine fellows have mentioned Savage rifles.

What is wrong with you!! According to "Big Stick" the resident rifle pro, if you use a Savage you are "slummin".

So what's up??
Are you slummin'................................or is it just possible that you really don't give a rat's a$$ what BIG STICK says.........................

'Stick is just an elitist snob.

Savage 11s and 110s are OK, but rather ugly and, well, with a very few exceptions, I'd rather have a good used 722 than a new 11 or 110, because I could always use the action for some project down the road.

Mauser96 and 260,

If thats your take on B.S. then why don't you take up your issues with him directly instead of ruining Sonny's thread.

1. I feel you owe Sonny an apology

2. I feel Big Stick owes you another can of whup-ass

3. Mauser96, you're a glutton for punishment, let it go.

Mtn Hunter, you're correct.

This put a crimp in Sonny's thread, and added a sour taste to it.

Sonny, my apologies.

The childish bickering is spoiling the whole forum, and I'll accept my share of the blame. As of this point, I'm out of the bickering.

Come on guys...Stick ain't thaaat bad. Seriously, maybe you should ask him yourself. He may have his (Anti-Savage) preferences when it comes to firearms, but so what? I like my Savage, and I seem to get along with him. And just because he shoots SUCKS actions, doesn't mean he's a bad person. Really.

Yes,I'm thaaaat bad(grin).

I hold no illwill against Savage, though I don't happen to find them the endall, nor THE most accurate. Though it could be easily debated that they feel THE most club like and are THE ugliest.

I shoot lotsa actions and simply favor some over others and for various reasons. That is subjective.

Savage Guys are pretty easy to get a rise outta and that ain't subjective(grin). But it truly humors me to no end, that someone with zero Savage trigger time is craving the position of being the Savage Poster Boy.

That it is a dubious honor, further frosts the cake..............

Thanks for the info nononsence, I know that the Huskys were all long actions, basically Mauser 98s, right??? It is my understanding that the .308 is a medium action, is that right? So does a person just want to find a good long action or is there a medium size action available? As far as the Savage argument is concerned I feel a little like Big Stick, they are good actions but are not the nicest to look at and feel a bit out of balance to I am looking for an alternative. As far as price, I want to keep it down so therefore a new rifle is out. I would rather find an older one or build one up, I like the idea of the gunsmith with the economy job, I think around $300 for a barreled action, I would consider that but would probably go with a Shelin barrel on a good action when I find one. Is the 722 capable of handling the .308? and is it as good as a 700?
