IMO the $350 you gave a couple years ago is now $450 or $500 due to rising price of used and new guns (along with everything else) and the fact that you can just pop on gunbroker and see what they're selling for.

Kimber7man, You make a good point about the rising costs. Seems like too often I'll fritter away a year or two just waiting for the good deal I know is out there somewhere and by the time it shows up the value of the item is elevated again.
Is it worth waiting to save fifty bucks and pass up all the enjoyment I could be getting from having it now? Anyway, if there are guys like DMB buying them for less than a used Savage 110 then I also may trip over one sometime.

The 722 in 300 Savage was a recent purchase, just a month ago.
They are out there (resonable priced ones), but prices are going up fast.

The whole discussion reminds me why I choose to tie up investment money in old Model 70 Winchesters. Don't have to make any excuses for them, desired by many, beautiful to look at, easy to shoot well. Just a number of things that I've always felt Remingtons aren't. Just never seem to hear of any Rem collectors or any certain ones that are desirable. Great shooters, yes, but nobody with good sense would put much investment money in one.

I have thought so much of the Roberts that I built a "walking around" rifle for the hills of California. The hunting I do requires walking usually some very steep hills. The Roberts was built on a M70 short action youth model .243 I received on a trade. I had a Shilen barrel in .257 in the garage so I had the barrel fitted to the action with a length cut to 18" and mated to a custom glass stock with a 14"LOP. I'm 6'5" so the longer stock fits the shirt sleeve hunting I usually do. Loaded with Hornady 100 grain SP @ 2600 FPS, using H414 I get groups in the sub 1" range when I do my part. The glass is a 6X Leupold suitable for the open country I hunt. Thus far I have taken 2 deer, several wild pigs and a slew of coyotes. Very mild recoil, excellent balance, supreme confidence so it fits my expectations exactly as I wanted. What else could I say about this old but very efficient cartridge?

284: Sounds like a great rifle. Question: did the short actoin M70 require any magazine or feed rail type modifications inorder to handle the 257? thanks,

I traded for a very nice M-722 in .300 Sav. about a yr. ago. I really don't know what I have into it and don't care... (Altho' I think it's somewhere around $350). The guy I bought if from offered me a .257 a couple of days ago for $400. I offered him $350 I don't know if I can get it or not. He said he'd get back to me...

I also have a Ruger M-77RL tang safety in a Short Action in .257. Haven't shot it yet.

I have owned 257 Ruger 77 RLs in both the tang safety and Mark II versions, both of which were built on long actions. The only .257" bore short action 77s that I recall seeing were chambered in 250-3000 Savage.

The 77 RSI that I have in 257 Roberts is a hybrid of a long 77 RL barreled action and a 77 RSI stock, with the barrel trimmed back and Ruger open sights installed.

I recently purchased a 722 in 257 Roberts and it is very accurate but it does not extract shells consistently. I took it to my favorite gunsmith and he told me that it was essentially impossible to obtain parts to repair the extractor. Does anyone reading this message have a suggestion? The gunsmith told me that some people drill out the boltface and install a model 700 bolt mechanism but that would be expensive.

GPC has them listed in their on-line catalog, but they are currently out of stock.

www.gunpartscorp.com

Part #719330 for $28.35.

You might also want to check with Jack First in Rapid City, SD, or Remington for their advice.

I bought a 257 Roberts 722 a few months ago. It is very accurate but after the purchase I discovered that it had extraction problems and I had to have some fancy gunsmithing done to replace the old extractor with a modified 700 extractor. If you check that it extracts OK then I'd give it a green light.

I had one when I was a kid and it was a great working rifle..

You can improve it greatly by substituting a Mod. 721 follower and magazine, so you can seat your bullets out a little more..you can also have the throat lengthened to seat bullets out even more..This is really advantagous to the .257 Robts, it will really cook when you do this.

The Little Sky is calling me, too!

At some point in the recent past there was a run of Synthetic 700 ADL's in .257 Roberts, also. Unsure of the actual #'s produced, or when, but mine has the wart and is built on the short action. It also shoots the 90 gr X bullets under an inch. Next project is to try the 100 gr TSX, as I think I may be out of the 90s.

A decent gunsmith can put a Sako extractor in for you. My 722 is at McWhorter's having that done.

The 700 ADL matte synthetic rifles were a non-cataloged, limited run, item.

IIRC, Remington has cataloged the following rifles in 257 Roberts:

722, 700 Classic, 700 Mountain Rifle, and 760.

Remington has also made the following non-cataloged runs of 700s and 7600s that I recall.

700 ADL mattle synthetic, 700 BDL, 700 Classic in stainless, and 7600.

I have 2 7600's in 257 Roberts. A great rifle for guys like me who have a hard time shooting bolts.

Remington also produced the 700ADL Synthetic in 222 REM
for a short period, when you find one the prices are very
high. The last 722 in 257R that I saw for sale was 575 if
I remember correctly.
