You know the one that sells for UNDER$300.00?? shocked

I looked at one today, a 270..from outward appearances it did not seem bad at all. I was actually sort of impressed after trying the trigger and working the action. Stock felt pretty good, well finished metal...I just don't understand how they can produce the things and sell them for $300 bucks.I was tempted to buy it just to mess with it.

Also looked at a 300 Win Mag Hawkeye, blue/walnut. I continue to be impressed by the job they're doing with the fit and finish on those.Solid rifle.....

Bob,
That Marlin kind of reminds me of a Savage or Stevens, pretty basic but functional. I've looked at a Hawkeye and agree they look good. I haven't owned a M77 for awhile and I wasn't too impressed with them.

John: The Marlin does look like a Savage in lineage. I know it's cheap, but it seems like a lot of rifle for "cheap".I think it's great that a guy on a budget can get a rifle that good; or a father can start a kid without breaking the bank.

I agree in the Rugers; but I've shot two new Hawkeyes and the accuracy was great out of the box.The 7 mag did really well clear to 500 yards with the factory 150 Fusion ammo.

The Marlin rifle also shoots very well.

The best game plan is to simply buy the stainless/synthetic Ruger Hawkeye instead of the other two.........

Allen: No disagreement at all there;like you said; the Hawkeye is "solid gear".....a perverse element inside me wanted to see if the Marlin shot well, as JB has pointed out.

I like "range guns",rifles chambered for the same stuff I hunt with that I can shoot to excess and not care if the barrel goes, but not so expensive.Just a fun rifle for yuks.Volume and funstuff like off-hand at 300 yards.I looked at the Marlin again today, and the trigger was pretty damn good! smile

Read 2 articles on the Marlin. One called it a "bargin beauty" It looks like a neat little rifle to me, but I haven't held one in my hands. At 6 1/2 lbs I would like to see it in some short action calibers. About 1/2 the price of a Mdl 7 Rem witch is one of my favorite rifles. Seems to shoot around 1 MOA with factory, so I think it could easily be a sub. MOA rifle with a little effort. Heck, It's hard to find a used rifle for $300!

It does seem odd they can sell it for $300 with all that it offers. However, remember pocket calculators, personal computers, microwave ovens and so many other goods? Started expensive then soon became so common and inexpensive. That is the way the gun companies SHOULD be operating today. I'm sure some of these lo-buck guns never touch a human hand until the end user. Complete automation. I hope that is what Marlin is doing. They should cost less today than thirty years ago.
Oh, I have one of the new Marlins bought and paid for, 25-06, but they are slow in delivering that caliber. The 270 I handled was far above the other $300 guns out there, including many used guns in that price range.

338: Yes I noticed that myself; the fit and finish on the thing was good; the barrel sat squarely in the stock,no leaning to one side or the other, recoil pad nicely done, and the action was pretty smooth. The trigger broke very well for an untuned rifle. I could not run rounds through it,so who knows? Hate to admit it, but the damnn thing had fewer flaws than some of the late M70 Classics I've looked at....but the price just left me sorta speechless...it was like $293.00.Last time I paid that for a rifle was a LONG time ago.

Good for Marlin.Hope they sell a bunch.

Are they totally made in the good old USA? If so that is quite an impressive price for sure.

I looked at one of the Marlins at the RMEF convention at Reno and was also favorably impressed. It felt very nice and looked very good for 300 clams. I later talked with Mule Deer at the Wolfe booth and he said they shoot well also. Overall I don't see how a person can do much better for dollars spent. wink

Good thread Bob.
That $300 price adds a new dimension in the rifle marketplace.
You could buy one just for the action if you have a mind to do so.
I think Marlin has a winner. Kudos to them and their leadership for bringing an affordable rifle to us buyers.

Isn't it odd (or sad) that low buck rifles like this Marlin, most Savages, and all Tikka's tend to be so damn accurate - yet so many "pricey" rifles pattern like shotguns?

I won't ever buy a "non-guaranteed" rifle again.

What I mean is Cooper guarantees three shots into 1/2 inch at 100 yards.
Weatherby Vanguard M.O.A. guarantees three shots into an inch at 100 yards.
Tikka T3 guarantees three shots into an inch at 100.
Sako 85 guarantees five shots into an inch at 100.

Why do I want to take my chances with hard earned money on companies that are afraid to back up their product?

To me it's like buying an unguaranteed scope - "ain't gonna happen".
