I'm pleased to hear about all the success with reboring. Until know the results I've read about were kind of ho-hum at best. I have an old guild style mauser barrel that was originally chambered in a 8X57J. It's a great looking barrel, but the bore was almost smooth. It was sent to Jim Dubell who bored it out to .338 then rechambered to a .338-06. It's off being rustblued right now. This is one I'm very excited about. I've always' wanted a .338-06. I hope mine shoots as well as the ones mentioned here.

the same late gentleman....Richard something....the shop was called Hilltop or something like that, did a so-so .22-250 sporterweight M700 into a 20 in. 7-08 that is sub-MOA with several factory loads.

While I have not read any of the posts above I do own four rebores. The three rifle rebores were done by Cliff LaBounty in 338-06, 35 Whelen and 9.3x82 on Remington (338-06) and Mauser barreled actions. All three are consistent sub-1" 3 shot guns with my hunting loads. I also have an Old Flattop Ruger 357 conversion to 38 WCF who's barrel was rebored by Al Siegrist (sp?) that is extremely accurate. Jim Dubell purchased LaBounty's equipment, training and business so I would likely head there or to Mr. Siegrist given my experience.

Al Siegrist, who Grasshopper and I both have used, does a good job. He made a .338-06 out of a mark X .30-06 -- since sold off with my otehr bolt guns; another from a .30-06 Ruger 1B; and most recently a 9.3x62 froma .270 1B.

Incidentally, Klikitarik, he lives on Turtle Lake Road and G and I have coemto refer to him as the "Wizard of Turtle Lake".

What does it cost to have one rebored? Is it comparable to rebarreling?

Quoted from clearwater re-boring

Rebore Only

We rebore your rifle barrel to a larger caliber of your choice. All chambering work is performed by you or your gunsmith. This service DOES NOT include re-marking the caliber designation or recutting the crown. Send your barrel only.

Price.................................................................................................................$185.00

Rebore with Neck and Throat

We rebore your rifle barrel to a larger caliber of your choice and then cut a new neck and throat into the chamber. This allows you to step up in caliber while staying within a family of cartridges. A common example is converting a .30-06 Springfield to a .35 Whelan. This service includes a new muzzle crown and re-marking the caliber designation. We require that you send the complete firearm so we can accurately headspace and test fire it.

Price.................................................................................................................$295.00

Rebore with Rechamber

We rebore your rifle barrel to a larger caliber of your choice and then cut a new chamber. An example is converting a .22-250 Remington to a .308 Winchester. This service includes a new muzzle crown and re-marking the caliber designation. We require that you send the complete firearm so we can accurately headspace and test fire it.

Price.................................................................................................................$340.00

In some instances it's well worth the cost.

I had a Winchester 54 rebored from the orig 30-06 [evidently a lot of corrosive ammo through it] to 35 whelen at Fred Wells' place back a few years.....shoots great. I've got a buddy that had a barrel done by Dan Pederson [Cutrifle, already mentioned] that turned out to shoot just fine also. Go with a quality guy and as the ads say..."just do it"

I always wanted a 44 mag Ruger No.1. ..... I'm new to the reboring barrels - so I can bring in a 375 or 405 and have it rebored to 44? This works pretty well?

Richard Nickle was the owner of Hilltop in Eatonville WA. I had the honor of spending the day with him in the shop while he rebored my Rem 721 30-06 to 35 Whelen. What an interesting day that was, I will cherish that opertunity for he rest of my life.

My father was a machinist and I worked in the same shop with him for a few years so I understood what Mr Nickle was doing, I think or at least hope he had an enjoyable day also.

Oh, the rifle shoots great.

After watching him work and his explanation about stuff I've had no qualms about tackling things like rechambering here at home and have done a 223 to 22-204 and a 6x47 to 6mm-204 with great success.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I had a 30-06 rebored by Cliff LaBounty to 35 Whelen about 12 years ago, just before he retired. It turned out great. Extremely accurate rifle.

I had JES reboring do a Sedgley Springfield 30-06 to 375 Whelen two years ago and I am well pleased with it.

JES charges around $225-$250 and has the fastest turn around time of anyone in the business. My 375 was 10 days from my door back to my door.

Yep. Just sent one (Rem 700, 30-06) to him on Monday to be rebore/rechambered in 9.3x62. This will be the 4th rebore JES has done for me. Each of the previous rebores were well done and surprisingly accurate. Why I passed them on, I don't know - gotta quit doing that. cry For one reason or another, I'd take each of them back if I could.

Randall Redman rebored a pre '64 Winchester M/70 from .30-06 to .35 Whelen for me about 20 years ago. It shoots great.
