I tell ya, one of the best things I have ever done is borrow the ideal from a fellow family camper of getting some empty coffee cans, one for each kid, and put some cool trinkets in them for a treasure hunt. Sharpie the child's first letter of their name on top. During the day, I steal away for about 15 minutes. I go out from the camping area and "hide" the cans, all the while, placing some bright eyes thumbtacks into trees (orange on the left white on the right). When night time rolls around and the fire is blazing "hey what's that?" with the flashlight, and the hunt is on. They love it and will remember it for their life.

I was just reading everybody's suggestions and I forgot something. Even though the stoves are great, especially if you're doing all you're cooking in a screened in canopy, try a dutch oven. You can pick em' up at Academy or Sportsman's Warehouse.

They are a lot of fun to play with and a quick search online will show you that you can make just about anything in one. Matter o' fact, I don't think I've camped with the family without using mine in years. They are a lot of fun if you have any chef in your blood.

And also, if you do run the propane stove and lanterns take a good look at this one. They're auto-light and I haven't used my two mantle since I bought it.

I've also found (the hard way) that those little LED flashlights -- the ones with a stack of watch batteries --- attached to those ID card necklaces via a keyring ROCK for the kiddies. they're much harder to lose that way, esp if you put a strip of reflective tape on the necklace.

Thanks for all the input guys. I called Sportsman's and a lot of their stuff is going on sale next weekend. I guess I'll head that way.

whatever tent you buy, use the seam seal method described here to seal the tent for you
http://www.sixmoondesigns.com/support/seam.asp
it works to make even a cheap tent fairly waterproof.

Sorta pricey, but take a look at either Springbar or Kodiak, they're very similar, canvas tents! I borrowed for use in MT this year and was impressed with the room, ease of set up, and ability to buck the wind. Now if I could just figure out a wood stove system for one...
