Dober, I actually hunted over one for pheasants. He was a close working hard drive dog. The only problem I saw was the maintance of the coat. His ears seemed to be a burr magnet.

Thx, I wondered about that, I spose I could cut him close in the early fall like I used to do for my springer?
Did the rest of the coat collect as well or just around the head?
Many thx Dober

No It seemed to be all over. I guess a tight cut before season would help. Being that I have two GSP's It seemed like to much work for me.

Dutch-sorry it took a while. Bottom line I've mainly been a lab man but the wife would like a hound that doesn't shed as much.
Family dog and friendly, I've 2 grandkids and the dog needs to be super around them.
Eager to please and the less shedding the better.
And of course it has to have a lot of hunt to it, and some water work accpetable but not a lot anymore. Cold is another thing as I would hunt it more than a fair bit in the late season.
Thx Dober
By the way, you still shooting your 223 super short?

For a versatile dog, I've had my eye on the Pudlepointer. I've got my springer now and it sure is tough to get my wife to accept anything but another lab. There is a kennel in Idaho, near Boise that I found doing some internet research...Cedarwoods, I think.
Do or do not, there is no try.

Mark,
I run a spino and she is fantastic. She will let my 2 year old climb up on her back and takes all the love/abuse that my two young boys can give her. She is very eager to please and has a phenomenal nose. She was skittish as a pup, and that required a lot of socializing and extra work with acclimating to the gun. She swims like a fish (partial webbing) and bays like a hound at strangers, but is all bark there. She does burr up on the feet and ears, but not much body wise. You mentioned shedding specifically so I must tell you that she sheds. She is acquiring her wire coat and the old hair goes somewhere, so don't mistake them for shedless. I had labs as a kid and enjoyed them, but I love working behind this pointer, so I am very happy with mine. I have her also trained on rabbits and she knows the difference between hunt birds and hunt rabbits.

Doing great, Mark. Getting ready to make the move to Oklahoma. I'm home working and Clay gets to go hunt.

What do you want to do with this dog? How far are you willing to train it. Do you want a steady to shot pointer? Are you planning to hunt waterfowl? What type of range do you want close work or mid to long range? Have you hunted over pointers? I would speak to some professional trainers and find out what they think if they have worked with this breed.Chad Hines at willow creek kennels (320)3603603 or Ed Ericson at autum breez kennels(320)679 8218
