The origin of the well-fed, declawed black cat remained a mystery, but authorities said it did not appear to have been living in the wild. Emphasis mine.... "did not appear to have been living in the wild." No schit, huh? What was the first clue?

At 10pm one very dark evening in 1975, in central New Brunswick, I drove up beside a black cougar standing on the side of a remote highway. I never completely stopped, but the big cat--over 100 lbs-- only moved off when my right front fender came to within a couple feet of it. I called it a "black panther" but was corrected when I questioned a friend who was a local guide. I also did research (Encyclopedia Britannica)and found that there was a black strain of cougar that had migrated up from Florida into the Appalachians--which go on into Quebec. Since then there have been documented reports of other sightings, including my eldest son who, with wife and family, spotted a black one in central New Brunswick in the late 1990s. At first he tought it was a black bear until he came to within a few yards of it in mid-afternoon while driving down a very long hill.

http://www.cathouse-fcc.org/jaguarundi.htmlBlack panther stories are abundant here. The problem is no one has come up with a black panther. I once got charged by a black panther. Obvious this one was also captive, as he had a doghouse fastened to the chain on his collar. The rossettes were also plain to see in the melanistic color, So this was a leopard. I've been lucky enough to see and view in the wild 3 of the critters in the link above. If you can view long enough in the wild, and shillouette plainly, apparent they are not likely cougar or leopard. They are somewhere around 20# full grown, and around the 15 inch area at the shoulder in height. The dark phase can appear black in shade or twilight. Very easy for people to describe as black panther under certain conditions. They can also possess cougar coloration. The video in in link shows the dark phase, a male, and gives you some idea why their movement has a weasel like desription.
