Guys I posted at some backpacking websites and got mostly negative feedback about the Marmot PreCip jacket. Yet here most were positive. I gotta go pick up my order from REI but am now starting to think maybe I should get a different jacket.

I really did want a lightweight water/wind stopper and only paid $49 bucks for the PreCip.

What were the reasons for the negative feedback? Sometimes you'll see a review and they will bash something just for not having the little accessories that they like. ie. Blasting a jacket because it doesn't have pit zips. Gotta look at the reasons. Might actually be something that you wanted and were looking for. Most the time it's not. But, sometimes.

Mostly durability and breathability.

I just used a new precip on a 10 day coastal brown bear hunt and I loved it. I live in Alaska's South east this is a rain forest we use a lot of rain gear. I was always against breathable rain gear until i bought the marmot precip. It is very light, keeps the wind and rain out, and it lets some of the sweat out...

I deceided against and am going with the REI Taku instead. Am going with the Loden/Dusty olive.

Thanks for the input.

Probably not a bad idea. I have never owned a precip but worked in a few outdoor stores. I have seen a lot of them come back mostly for delaminating or leaking on the shoulders.

I really like clodveil hard shells. Not as packable as a precip but I have yet to be wet. The jacket I have is the troller and I cant remember the name of the pants.

REI had the cloudveil on sale today. They didn't have my size in stock so I went with the Taku. I like the zippers better on the Cloudveil. But went with the Taku. If the zips don't hold out I'll grab the cloudveil.

Never had a Precip but I was concerned about the durability and breathability. I hunt hard and am tough on gear. Everything I own is like a tool to me. So it's gotta hold up.

The Taku kicks butt for durability. Good hood design, too. A lot bulkier than the Precip, but you can't have both...

That precip looks nice, guys.
I will have to log back on to REI and have a look at the Taku-

The precip isn't gonna keep heavy rain out. The Taku will and breaths much better. The Taku is pretty darn light. I also like the Taku pants.

Had precip in heavy rain without issues.... Dn't know how long it'll last though

But I'm with 1AK... if it breathes it ain't gonna work and if its really durable I ain't gonna backpack with it...

I'd heard same about frog toggs.... we lived in some serious rain/sleet with them. They will rip easier to me though. But they were cheap enough to buy new every year. And not have to worry about investing the bank in a set and then ripping them.
