Great way to spend the day. What a great thing to do with your son. Those are some nice pictures.
I spent a day up the Sukunka and driving into the Septimus region near Dawson Creek last Monday. We saw 12 black bears and one fine grizzly. Didn't shoot any, but it was great simply seeing the number of bears. We also saw a number of elk--bulls with antlers beginning to develop quite nicely, yearlings just run off from mama, and pregnant cows. There were a goodly number of mule deer and whitetails as well.
Where did you say we are going? And why are we in this handbasket?

Mr. redmtn; Thank you for sharing the pictures with us, it looks to me like a fine way to spend a day.
Id like to send a tip of the hat your way for taking your son out to enjoy the outdoors with you. Well done sir.
Our youngest daughter and I were just leaving the yard today on the way bass fishing, when we spotted a little reddish brown phase bear swimming in a pond across from our place. Were not clear as to why he decided to bathe mid day, but when he came out of the pond he was one of the longest legged and or skinniest bears I can remember seeing for some time. He had ears long enough to be a donkeys cousin if you know what I mean, and legs to match!
Your bear in the photo looks much, much bigger.
Well, thanks again and again, well done to you.
Regards, Dwayne

Nice pics! That country looks awful familiar! I have hunted spring bear around Penny once or twice myself and appreciate the scenery every time. Good luck finding a shooter!

I have been thinking of applying for a tag in 7-18. I have a couple of spots that offer relatively easy alpine access. But my schedule may have me apply for 7-17....just to shave a couple of hours off the comute. Either way, I had better get my entries in asap as time is running out!

I had about a two or three year old (200 to 300lbs?) bear circling the fenced part of my property yesterday. If he comes back - I'll try and get a picture. The reason for my concern is we have miniature donkey's foaling right now - including one baby a week old. He circled the fenced portion, showing very little fear, of my wife and I and the barking dogs.
He had the most unique colour I have ever seen on a black bear. Well, except for one I once saw that was a cinnamon with black legs. This one is jet black on the rear legs, fading into red along the belly, and bright auburn red from the chest forward - with a chocolate head.
As a rule, I don't shoot small bears, and I prefer to hunt them, not just shoot my yard bears - but, the safety of the lifestock comes first - and he's SO unique looking.
I guess I'm trying to talk myself into it.
My wife say's "I've got no problems with you shooting him - I hate worrying about the foal."
PS - Great photos redmountain

Small or not, that sounds like a great trophy and a good reason to bag it!

Mr. BCBrian; It sounds like your yard bear might be getting a bit too acclimated to humans for his own good.
Down south here, we say that it has a mineral imbalance. It needs a bit of lead, or in your case copper, behind the ear to balance it out.
Anyway, should you help it with the imbalance, please send up a photo onto the airwaves for us to see, as the color sounds very unique.
Good luck with your yard bear.
Regards, Dwayne
