What is the best way to remove the stain from an old gunstock without damaging it? I've reluctantly tried oven cleaner which seems to get it out pretty quick but appears to leave a powdering white film on the stock after a while. I'm located in Australia so a lot of your US products won't be available here.

Mick all I've used is Easy Off oven cleaner but I've not had any white film like you're talking about. I wash the wood down real good with actetone before I start refinishing it.
