Hi, I just acquired a Savage Model 99 from my father-in-law. He never used it. It has a hex barrel, straight stock with crescent butt. The serial number stamped on it is 6550, it has the rotary magazine. It has a marble no. 6 front site. The patent info on the barrel is Feb 7, 1893, Jul 25 1893. cal. .303. I has no checkering or engraving anywhere. The rifle is like new, there are a few very minor dings. One place on line told me that it was an 1895, 108 years old. I can't believe it is that old due to the almost new condition of the rifle. Can any of you give any info on this rifle?

Thanks

A letter from the historian would definately solve your question, I'd say it was more in the 1897 range.

Historians info:

Mr. John T. Callahan

Savage Arms Historian

53 Old Quarry Rd.

Westfield, MA

01085

$20 per gun

send serial # and details of what you would like to know.

allow 3-4 weeks.

No problem Bob, but it's not a model 99, it's a model 1895 and if it's in the condition you say it is, it's worth alot of money and they're hard to find with condition like that! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Do you know any more about the history of the rifle? It sounds like it was in the family a while. Would be interesting to hear about the old girl.

CHEIFBOB,

Can you post a picture? I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would like to see this.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, somethings going on here!

That isn't a 1895 forearm, nor an 1895 butt stock the pads aren't shaped right. The bolt has been damascened as well??

Well I know I'm confused? Looks like a model B but I don't know whats going on with the bolt.

Are you sure about that serial number? If so, someone has put alot of work into this old 1895!

Does the bolt have a hole in it or a little bar that pops up when it is cocked? It might be an 1895, but it sure looks like a highly refinished 1895.

The bolt has the little bar that pops up when it is cocked. I don't know anything about the rifle except my father-in-klaw has had it since 1993 or sooner. He bought two boxes of ammo and marked on the boxes bought 2/93. He never fired any of the ammo.

Thanks

It may have been one that was brought in during the transition and it was upgraded but that still doesn't explain how the bolt got damascened. Someone has had this rifle customised.

Hi

I need to find an owners manual for my 1895 303 Savage. I got a certificate from the Savage Historian verifying it is an 1895 made by John Marlin prior to Savage getting his factory up and running. It was sent back to the factory in 1920 for unspecified work, I assume that is when it was modified with the hex barrel and different bolt. Can anyone direct me to an owners manual, I an trying to find out how to clean the magazine and the internal parts. I would also like to mount a scope, any suggestions? I am looking for someone to reload or the equipment to reload.

Thanks

Bob

I've owned two pre 1899 (1895) Savage catalogs.
Sold one for 1K.The other went at auction for about 1,500.$
Good luck finding one. smile

None of my F-in' business Chiefbob, but if you mount a scope on that 1895 I will personally have to grab it from your un-appreciative hands, and swiftly butt-stroke you with it across your face!

The 1895 and 1899 are pretty hard to scope unless you go with the Saturn-Boone or a Miller-Kodiak mount.

You certainly weren't talking about drilling it for modern scope mounts?

The Miller-Kodiak can be used with modern scopes and uses the rear sight dovetail like the Stith but is long enough where the Stith isn't.

Can help you out with either of those if you are interested.

3589, By "Butt-Stoke" I mean to grab the rifle as a sort of blunt weapon, aim the "butt" at his face, and slam it back end first into his jaw. Sorry about the gay thing, your barking up the wrong tree....However, I AM a Ninja!
