I'm just curious as to if this is possible, and if it's a huge or pricey ordeal. Can you remove the bayonet and lug from the barrel of a Nagant? Probably an M44, if that makes any difference.

i removed one a while back. if i rember right it only has one pin holding it on. drive the pin out then give it a few whacks with a 2x4 & it should slide right off, or at least mine did

Really? For some reason I thought it was more 'integral'. If that's the case, though, that's good to know - Thanks!

You got lucky.. The only one I had in for that job took a LOT of work and a LOT of heat to get that beggar to move.. Dang near had to machine it off...
Last time I'm EVER working on a Nagant rifle...

Yeah, that's more like what I was expecting. I'm thinking about trying to find an M38 to avoid this altogether, but they're a bit more money, and that might make the difference.

i had no problem knocking out the two pins holding the combination front sight/bayonet lug onto the barrel or cutting off the lug and reshaping the front sight. you will be left with a small groove on the side of the barrel, however. the only M38 carbine i saw was at a large dealership in prescott, az and the stock refinish looked like an 8th grade wood shop student project, in other words very rough and amaturish but the gun was less than 100.00 !

H*ll, ALL the Mosins have stocks that look like an adolescent project. About the only exceptions were the US-made ones, early, early Ruskis and Finns. Crude metal work too, but the ugly ducklings can shoot. Here's a 38 that was dolled up Korean War timeframe by Japanese artisans. Converted for GI's who obtained a war trophy. Stll in 7,62X54R.
