I don't necessarily disagree with you VA ... but since the guy wanted to do something to change it, I figured one of the better and easier routes would be the improved chamber, and just answered the guy's questions about it ...

but yah, should have mentioned that if he's not handloading, a wildcat cartridge is really not worth it in any real way ... Just toss a new bbl on there in 7mm-08 and go to town ...

I'd leave it in 7-08 and have fun. I've done the Ackley thing and in the field the difference in performance is not noticed.

Maybe putting a nice adult stock and rebarreling it might be the best thing to do. Sometimes it's hard not to jump when the bug bites. The pressure will come when I don't drop a deer in its tracks like my daughter has done(3 times).

My son also shoots a 7-08 and I'm always been fearful of grabbing the wrong ammo in a rush. I know we should never be in a hurry, but it happens.

Give the host here, Rick Bin, a shout and get a Mc Millan stock for your desire to spend and change. If your a whitetail hunter, you already have one of the best chambering's going IMO.

A compact hunter in swirly would be sweet with that 20 inch barrel smile

I am looking to rebarrel because it has a 20 inch barrel on it now and I would like to go at least to 22 inches.

I grew up (well so, I got older there) in Northern Minne and love to go back there and hunt whitetails. I actually prefer it to here.

My question to you however is why is it that you're wanting to go to a 22" tube instead of a 20"?

Also, what else do you have in the corral to run?

A 250AI would be cool.

(That's a 250/3000 Savage with the "AI" treatment.)

Since you've got to stick with a short action .284" bore cartridge, that pretty much limits you to the 7mm-08AI, 284, 7mm SAUM, or 7mm WSM. The 1st 2 cartridges only require a rebore job, which the 2nd 2 cartridges will require (as a minimum) a rebore, opening of the bolt face, and swapping out the magazine box and follower.

If you don't reload, your options are limited and probably no better than the 7mm-08 for most applications. I currently have 13 Remington 7s, but none in 7mm-08, so I can't comment specifically on that combination.

I believe if it shoots decent as is, I would leave it alone as a 708 and spend some money on a McMillan Classic stock which fits you and a color you like or which works for you. Also, it may be time to spend some money on some hunting glass, such as a Leupold VXII 3x9x40. I would just get a drop in stock and see how it performs. Then as time goes on, you can put a custom #3 contour tube on at 22". The stock can be opened up if necessary at this time and also be bedded to fit at this time. There isn't much the 708 can't do within reason given the correct bullet. IMO. FWIW.

If you're going to re-stock it, and put another barrel on it, the 7mm-08 is a heck of a good cartridge. But, if you don't currently handload, and IF you're not going to start in the immediate future, the .308 is also a heck of a great cartridge, and offers a huge selection of factory ammo. Once you do start reloading, there is an endless supply of varying components for the .308, and it is extremely forgiving. That is the way I would lean...

There are few to NO rifles handier in a deer stand (be it ladder, box, or Chevrolet) than a Rem M7.

Doecamper's M7 goes about 7 and a hair "all up" with Dednutz X Lows and a 2-7x32 Alaskan Guide (and a lumber stock to boot). 7 1/4 with Talleys and a 6x42 Sightron SII. Sounds like a "Mountain Rifle" to me.

Routinely chrony's 139 Hornady SP's at 2875 and will touch high 29xx with 120 TSX or Horny VMax. Is there really any critter in the lower 48 that you'd be disadvataged with those bullets and MV's?

Resist the urge to change the rifle other than a stock to fit. If it is still muzzle light, lighten the butt some.

Mark, I just like the longer barrel. I have a 30-06 and 2 7-08's. They are the M7(daughter) and a Browning Micro Hunter(son).

Everyone is 100% correct about how practical and, well, wonderful the 7mm-08 round is. I've killed 7 or 8 deer with one and they work fine.

HOWEVER, you are on the Custom Rifles forum, asking what to change it to! What has gotten INTO people, advising you to leave it the same!?

I have Model 7 that was formerly a 7mm-08. I had Pac-Nor put a 20" Supermatch barrel on it, lap the lugs, and I think they square up the action some too. Not a full blueprinting. Anyway that was just over $400 at the time; I think it's more like $500 now.

I could not be happier with my .358. I think it's about as perfect as a caliber gets for killing deer-sized things. Details upon request.

Mine ended up looking like this. I just hogged out the existing stock to fit the bigger tube and re-bedded it.

My second choice in a Model 7 would be 338 Fed. Third choice, .308. I think a M7 is a fine intermediate-range rifle; might as well choose calibers with similar attributes, eh?

Have FUN!!!
