I know this sounds dumb and cheap, BUT. I was told that with a very minor cut to the depth of thread a Remington 700 barrel would fit a Ruger action. Does anyone know if this is true? I guess it would give a poor boy a cheap take-off barrel solution.

It is true. I had a custom 250 AI barrel for a Remington 700 that I bought for a song fitted to my tang Ruger 77. Shoots like a house-a-fire too!

Remington 700's have a barrel thread of 1-1/16" x 16 tpi,Ruger 77's are 1" x 16tpi,as are Win 70's.Remington 700 barrels can be rethreaded and rechambered to fit Ruger 77's and Win 70's quite easily.

Why??? For what it would cost to recut that nasty factory tubes threads to make 1" x 16 TPI from the Remmnys 1.0625" thread. You may just as well get a good barrel.
I dont know of any smiths personally that would even do that.

I've heard a rumour this can apply to older Sakos too. Is this true? (Remington take-off barrel onto Sako L61 action?)

You still have to check headspace.
I had a Rem barrel on my Win 70 push feed. I just took it off, because it is in poor shape. I bought it used, already installed. The original owner took a Rem 25-06 barrel and rechambered it to a 25-308. Just for fun,I screwed in a Ruger 77 MkII .223 Rem Take off barrel I have. It fits too, but a little loose.

Before I had my Sako L579 action barrelled I had a M70 barrel here. It screwed right in, no problem. They are both a 1" x 16 tpi thread. Not sure about other Sakos, although I may find out soon , when I take the barrel out of my AII.

I recall a magazine article, upon this very subject.
It has been a spell and my memory banks are clouded, but I believe it were a 40X tube slammed upon a Ruger 77 MKII. Can't recall what chambering precisely, but it mighta ended up as a 22BR.
You boys help me out here,as it mighta been in VH?..................

Yes, it was in Varmint Hunter Magazine. Dogzapper could fill you in, he did the article. John
