I recently aquired a page from a 1941 spiegels catalog. It shows 3 stevens 22's, and an EG. d and t, leather sling, receiver engraved, brass nameplate with your name engraved.the 22's came with nameplate and canvas sling. the nameplates are not visible in pic. I would post the pic, but am having computer problems. was just wondering how much of that was factory? price was 49.95. are there any records of sales to spiegels? If the d+t and sling was factory, have too many guns of this era been dismissed as non-factory?just curious, Tom W.

The Savage log books from 1941 won't help much. The "engraving" and "D&T" are interesting. Does the engraving pattern show in the ad? Sounds like a roll engraved version...? I'm very interested in what you have found. I'd sure like to see the ad.

That does sound like the "Salesman Samples" that we see so much of, doesn't it? They were d&t by the rear sight..

Would definitely love to see a scan of that catalog.

The engraving looks very similar from what I can see. The rear scope mount holes are in line with bore, in front of the cocking indicator. the front holes are not visible. By the description, the nameplate was on the sling. The picture shows the engraving, but the description doesnot mention it. The d.+t., sling are in description.

Mike...

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

That sure do look like it..

So, I vote that the "Salesman Samples" be tentatively renamed "Spiegel Specials". Keeps the same initials at least. grin

Who knows? Spiegel was a big outfit back then and it's not unthinkable that they and Savage would do a deal for some special guns.

Do you have a picture/scan of the whole page? (yeah I'm gonna bitch about the right side being cropped...)

Thanks for sharing!!!!!!

Well, I just can't see that Speigel would have advertised a 99 with roll engraving and then not sold that rifle. Major customer dis-satisfaction.. and wouldn't have been a big deal for Savage since they had the setup already because the 99K's.

The only negative I can think of is that normal d&t for scopes in the late 30's was a side mount. The barrel holes still are mysterious.

Yah, hard to believe that not one specimen with that front scope mount has surfaced.

Looks like the sling was attatched utilizing the forend screw like a lot of the aftermarket sling swivels.

The page is too big for my scanner. Your only missing half a squirrel and the front sight, which is as described.I don't know if my camera would get it as clear, but will try it sometime. Is it possible that speigel sales records are still in existence?

I doubt that the old Spiegels records are anywhere to be found. When I was a kid (1950s) the Spiegel catalog was a big deal in our house. They sold everything Sears and Monkey Ward did back then. My folks perception was that Spiegel's merchandise was better quality. We probably threw out that catalog when we moved Mom off the farm in 1982. Tons of magazines and catalogs went to the dump...I try not to think about it.

Today, Spiegel is a womans clotghing outlet.

Didn't even know that Spiegel's was still around at all. Monkey Wards is gone and J.C. Penney too for the most part. Seems like Sears is the last man standing and not on real solid ground. How the mighty have fallen.

There was a rifle very similar to this on Gunbroker. The auction ended as a no sale. It may be back up soon. The engraving looks the same, has sling etc.
