My boy just bought a mod 70 300 WSM Ultimate Shadow for a sheep rifle.
Lets put a scope rings and base on it...
he is looking at a monarch 3-12 X 42
he would like to stay under $600

If this is going to be his guide rifle I'd wouldn't go over 10 on the top end, probably less just to be smaller and handier for an every day pack. You know what your AK pals are going to say.

You know what your AK pals are going to say. I am curious. Is the 3-12X larger than the 3-9X? What is the physical difference? Maybe its just me, but if two are even close, I take the one with the most maginification. Or, the one with the most field of view.

Don't take more than you need, and that's way more for an everyday carry. Don't have the specs handy. For a guide gun I'd even think fixed in lieu of variable.

First of on the rings go with warnes. They are super strong and don't leave ring marks so if he ever decides to sell or switch scopes it will be worth alot more...
On the scope, that monarch will be a nice scope.
I really like the VX-II 3-9X40 with the LR-dot reticle for a good value on a solid scope.

Leupold VXII 3-9x40 LR dots and Low Talley Lwts... a match made in heaven for the 300 WSM/M70. Been there, done it.
$375 max total...

I have just the scope for you...it's a Zeiss 3-9X36. This is the German Diavari-C scope and not a Conquest, an extrememly high quality scope in a compact size. It is in the box like new, no ring marks, with all the papers. You won't find a better scope in this price range. I want $600.00 for it. Let me know what you think, Thanks, Shrapnel

smwoody: This may get me hazed,or relegated to the boneyard, but I'd be reaching for a 4X or 6X Leup, given the tough Alaska conditions, weight considerations,etc....

I'd buy the Tasco from Cpl......or a BSA
Seriously though a 3-9 vxII leupy, but there is nothin wrong with the Nikon either(I like the larger field of view of the Monarchs).

6x42 is my choice as I'm not such a big fan of variables. If I was though and for this particular rifle it would be a 2.5x8. Not too large, fairly compact with good weight as well.

Hint: When some thats hunt as much as BobinNH does gives a recommendations, and it coincides with other recommendations from people that hunt a lot, it is probably very very valuable advice... This will not be a test question-but could appear on a pop quiz

Yep, a fixed Leupold with nothing fancy would be the way to run for a guy that will be in the bush for months.
Might buy a 4x Leupold also and just stash it away.
