I know I've asked before, but I can't for the life of me remember the answer. Savage 99 in .250-3000, serial #6894xx. What year was it made? Thanks...

Mfr date should be 1953. If you look at the stamped code on the front of the lever (1 or 2 digits followed by a digit), you can figure out the final assembly date. A letter D is 1953, a letter E is 1954, etc.

Here's what I have in my records. As you can see, without the Lever Boss Code, it could be any of the three years listed below. D= 1952: 621686(3D), 625775(19D). 638145(3D), 643122, 655689, 6693xx, 6726xx, 673018(27D)
E= 1953: 6664XX (19E), 694,7XX(19E) 699XXX(19E), 709xxx(3E-my rifle), 724xxx(20E), 8351xx(0E), F= 1954: 686489(19F), 704960(13F), 7184xx, 727303(13F), 747330(14F), 751488(?3F),7567xx(5F), 835192(lettered by John T. Callahan-shipped from the factory on 8/13/54),Strength & Honor... Ron T.
It's smart to hang around old guys 'cause they know lotsa stuff...

Quite often they are poorly stamped. A magnifying glass might help. If you really have to know the best stamping is under the butt stock on the frame. If you remove the butt stock you will find it, but personally it is not worth the pain, hassle or risk of cracking the tang. 1953 is the most logical in the sequence for the DOM.
